A quick check of what's planned for the upgraded 508 bus timetable to compare it with what it ran over 70 years ago. The new timetable will (mostly) restore frequencies to 1955 levels. The 15 minute service will restore weekday service. However back then Saturday was considered a weekday which it isn't now. So Saturdays will be every 20 min. Sunday in the 1950s was quiet, especially the morning. So buses then either didn't run or were infrequent. In this case every 30 minutes before service ramps up to every 15 min in the afternoon. The weekend timetable being introduced will be more consistent with a 20 min service across the day (we don't yet know what evening frequencies will be). To anyone who wrote an email, handed out a flyer, picked up the phone or spoke to an MP - thank you. Here's a look from Tim Read MP on how we together got a major 508 bus service upgrade funded. Also Kat Theophanous MP & Sheena Watt MP for advocating within government and Gabrielle Williams MP for doing it.

Some more details on the 508 bus upgrade. Very welcome to see longer hours (until midnight Monday - Saturday) and especially weekend frequency (up from 30-40 min to every 20 min).

🚌 MAJOR BUS ANNOUNCEMENT 🚌

If you’re local to the inner north, you know the 508 bus.

It’s our crucial east–west link connecting Alphington, Fairfield, Thornbury, Northcote, Brunswick and Moonee Ponds.

It gets people to the shops, links to the train and trams, and it got me to high school and uni almost every day for years!

As part of our Labor state budget, it’s getting the upgrade our community has been calling for.

✔️ More frequent services – every 15 minutes in weekday peak
✔️ Weekend services doubled – every 20 minutes
✔️ Running later – extended to midnight Monday to Saturday

A $100 million investment will go towards better bus routes statewide – making it easier to get where you need to go.

Our community has pushed for this, and we’ve listened and delivered!

So good to hear the momentum for better PT services building across Melbourne. And especially good to now have backing from CPSU Victoria for better transport. As the main bus route across Melbourne's inner north but still with 30-40 minute gaps on weekends, our 508 must be top priority for a frequency upgrade to make it more useful service all week. Given local demographics, CPSU members votes is critical for MPs and candidates like Kat Theophanous MP in Northcote and Gabriel Steger - Labor for Brunswick in the upcoming state election.

Recent announcement for those near the eastern end of the 508. The 2026 state budget will find more weekend trains on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines with maximum waits cut to 20 minutes. The biggest benefits will be on Sunday mornings (no more 40 min gaps) and weekend evenings trains every 20 min instead of 30 min. These are much needed upgrades for trains.

508 passengers are no stranger to 30 and 40 min gaps either - that's the service we get on Saturday and Sundays respectively. Hoping the state budget can slash these gaps to the more frequent service that we need to go east-west in the inner north. Kat Theophanous MP Sheena Watt MP Enver Erdogan MP Gabrielle Williams MP

Tram works on route 57, 59 and 82 🚋

Our tram routes are getting ready for the next generation, the G class. These trams will be 25-metres long and will hold almost twice as many as the oldest trams that currently operate in Melbourne's west.

No need to touch on from today until April 30 with all public transport in Victoria free for a month. But we'd still love more frequent buses on the 508 all week!
