𝑼𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒈𝒐𝒉-𝑶𝒈𝒐𝒉 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒕𝒔 𝑭𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔.

Ogoh-ogoh itself is taken from the title ogah - unwilling from the Balinese language which means something to shake. In 1983 an important part in the history of ogoh-ogoh in Bali, in that year began to be made bhuta forms when it comes to Nyepi rituals in Bali. At that time there was a presidential decree which declared Nyepi as a national holiday. Since then the community began to make embodiment of piles which later was called ogoh-ogoh, in several places in Denpasar. This new culture is increasingly spreading when ogoh-ogoh are included in the XII Bali Arts Festival.

Definition of Ogoh-Ogoh
For ordinary people, ogoh-ogoh is a giant doll that is paraded around the village just before dusk before Nyepi (accompanied by the Balinese gamelan) called Bleganjur, then to be burned.

Ogoh-ogoh is a sculpture in Balinese culture that illustrates the personality of Bhuta Kala. In Hindu Dharma teachings, Bhuta Kala represents the immeasurable and undeniable power (Bhu) of the universe and time (Kala). In the embodiment of the statue in question, Bhuta Kala is described as a large and frightening figure; usually in the form of a Rakshasa. In addition to the Rakshasa form, Ogoh-ogoh is often also depicted in the form of creatures that live in Mayapada, Heaven and Naraka, such as: dragon, elephant, Widyadari, even in its development, some are made to resemble famous people, such as world leaders , artists or religious figures and even criminals.

In the 1986 edition of the Indonesian General Dictionary, Ogoh-ogoh is defined as a diverse ondel-ondel with a scary form.

Laura Noszlopy examines "Bali Arts Festival; Indonesian culture, politics and contemporary art "for the Arts of Africa Foundation defines ogoh-ogoh as follows. Ogoh-ogoh is a large sculpture made of pulp and material
sticks that are usually made by Balinese adolescents as part of the annual "cleansing ceremony", which takes place the day before Nyepi, Hindu new year or Nyepi day.

Hindu dharma scholars conclude that the process of celebrating ogoh-ogoh symbolizes the human awareness of the power of the universe, and the tremendous time, that power can be divided into two, first the power of the great bhuana, which means the power of the universe, and secondly the power of almighty which means power strength in humans. both of these powers can be used to destroy or make the world more beautiful.

Ogoh-ogoh actually has no direct connection with the Nyepi Day ceremony. Since the 80s, Hindus have been carrying ogoh-ogoh which have been united with the event around the village carrying a torch or what is called a ngerupuk event. Before starting the ogoh-ogoh parade, participants of the ceremony or parade usually do traditional liquor known as arak. In general, ogoh-ogoh are arak headed to a place that is named sema (the place where Hindu people lived before it was burned and when the co**se was burned) and then the ogoh-ogoh that had been paraded around the village were burned.

Because it is not a ceremonial facility, the ogoh-ogoh are paraded after the main ceremony is finished accompanied by a Balinese gamelan rhythm called bleganjur sculpture made with bamboo, paper, cloth and simple objects that are pure creativity and spontaneity of the community as spark of lively to enliven the ceremony rerupuk. Since it has nothing to do with Nyepi, it is clear that the ogohs are not absolutely present in the ceremony. But it still may be made as a complement to the festive ceremony.

Function of Ogoh-Ogoh
The function of Ogoh-ogoh is as a representation of Bhuta Kala, made before Nyepi Day and paraded around the village in the twilight of Pangrupukan, the day before Nyepi Day. According to Hindu Dharma intellectuals and practitioners, this process symbolizes man's realization of the mighty power of the universe and enormous time. These strengths include the power of the Great Bhuana (universe) and Bhuana Alit (human beings). In the view of Tattwa (philosophy), this power can deliver living things, especially humans and the whole world to happiness or destruction. All of this depends on the noble intention of humans, as God's most noble creatures in protecting themselves and the whole world.

HAPPY GALUNGAN & KUNINGAN
may Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (god) give Asung Kertha Wara Nugraha semeton sareng sami ring. (His blessings are for all of us)

"GALUNGAN"

Galungan holiday is celebrated by Balinese Hindus every 210 days, using Balinese calendar calculations, namely on the Buddhist day of Kliwon Dungulan (Wednesday Kliwon wuku Dungulan) as the day of the victory of Dharma (truth) against Adharma (evil).

"Mythology"
In a story of Balinese Hindu mythology, it is told that on the island of Bali there is a giant who is very powerful and feared by all people. The giant was named Mayadenawa. Mayadenawa banned all Hindu Balinese from worshiping temples to worship the Gods, because Mayadenawa wanted all people to worship him. Feeling so furious about Mayadenawa's behavior, Bhatara Indra was sent to go down to accelerate (the World) to meet and finish off the giant Mayadenawa.

It is said that Bhatara Indra's idea was already in a place that had a fairly steep slope, it was there that he managed to meet Mayadenawa. Bhatara Indra's idea told Mayadenawa that his actions were wrong and were not appropriate. But Mayadenawa was very arrogant and arrogant, he even began to fight. Because of the fight, Bhatara Indra's idea rushed to attack Mayadenawa, because of the greatness and supernatural power possessed by Bhatara Indra's ideas, Mayadenawa was overwhelmed. Then he ran trying to stay away from the Idea Bhatara Indra.

"KUNINGAN"

Kuningan is a holiday celebrated by Hindu Dharma in Bali. This celebration falls on the day of Saniscara (Saturday), Kliwon, wuku Kuningan. This holiday is held every 210 days, using the Balinese calendar (1 month in the Balinese calendar = 35 days). Ten days after Galungan. The word Kuningan has the meaning "kauningan" which means to achieve spiritual improvement by introspection to avoid danger.

"Kuningan Meaning"
Kuningan Day is a reception day for Galungan day as a dharma victory against adharma whose worship is aimed at the Devas and Pitara to go down to perform purification and mukti, or to enjoy offerings offered. The dharma victory (good) over adharma (evil) which has been celebrated every Galungan and Kuningan should be absorbed and carried out in everyday life.

GUNUNG KAWI

is a marvelous place, because it was a historic temple, which attracted many tourists from the country and from abroad. The temple located in the district of Tampaksiring in 10 km from Ubud to the north. It’s not so big, but it’s a quiet temple to which the forest enclosed the surroundings. A fountain begins to spring in the temple with clear water, which is called the “Holy Fountain.”

HAPPY SUGIHAN DAY
Sugihan Jawa and Sugihan Bali, both of which are a series of Galungan and Kuningan festivals that began at Saniscara Kliwon wuku Wariga or better known as Tumpek Wariga (25 Days).
Javanese Sugihan falls on Wrhaspati / Thursday Wage Wuku Sungsang while Sugihan Bali falls on Friday Kliwon Wuku Sungsang or the day after Sugihan Jawa.
Difference between Javanese Sugihan and Bali Sugihan. Both of these treats have meaning as a place for Purification, but the difference lies in what is purified (purified). If you look deeper, Sugihan Jawa is more about the cleansing of the macrocosm or universe, for example:

Niskala: cleansing by arranging the banten ceremony and the praying as a symbol of purification. All that is arranged for Ida Batara, the ancestors and the gods who reside in each palinggih or temple. It is believed that at the time of this Javanese Sugihan, the gods would descend accompanied by the melts to receive offerings.

Sekala: cleaning palinggih or places (ngererata or mabulung, namely the work of grabbing or pulling weeds that grow around palinggih) The term Bali.

Sugihan Bali is more about purification (cleaning) microcosm or self. Purification can be done by:

Sekala: Cleansing the physical body from the dirt of cyberspace dirt, so it is fit for habitation by the Holy Soul as a Brahma Pura. This cleaning can be done by asking for a cleaning / tapping tirta.

Niskala: The cleansing of the spiritual body (Suksma Sarira and Antahkarana Sarira) by doing meditation in meditation aimed at mulat sarira, because at this time people should have inner purity by refraining from all kinds of sensory temptations. This is the emphasis in relation to the implementation of the Sugihan Bali ritual.
