Warning sensitive content: urgent netting issues in Cheltenham 💔

A town known for it's love of pigeons and famous pigeon spa town story, but a town that has outdated netting causing loss of life in the most agonising way.

Cheltenham! You MUST do better.

LOCATION: 18 - 20 on the Promenade, the road leading up to the old Cavendish House.

This is an incredibly sad post to make, but with your help we can help help other pigeons that may be caught.

We have been in touch with a really helpful gentlemen who will be contacting the buildings owners. He has experience in rescue and offers better solutions than the dreadful netting that has been put up.

Sadly we couldn't save these 3 pigeons in time, however the firebrigade said they would come out if anymore were trapped.

How can you help?

If you are local to the area you can help monitor the situation, we are happy to come out and support any injured pigeons once saved.

This is an absolutely disgraceful situation, shares and media attention is encouraged. This is a horrendous way for a pigeon to suffer, agonising to watch.

We love record keeping and statistics, so thought now would be a great time to share💚

We couldn't have done any of this without your support, and cannot thank you enough.

Our next goal is to build a dedicated aviary for wood pigeons in need of sanctuary. Their needs are a little different to feral pigeons, and we would love to be able to offer them a safe space for long term rehab, or a forever home- full of greenery and nature.

We would like to share this again as we have been made aware our name has been used to support a groups pro euthanasia policy in regards to PMV. This could not be further from the truth. We do not believe, nor have we ever believed, that birds with PMV should be euthanised on that alone. We have seen some brilliant rehabs and releases for PMV, and know many people willing to offer a perm home for ex-PMV birds who cannot be released. This is the same policy we have for other illnesses like pox, salmonella, breaks, etc. Euthanasia is the LAST option on the table. Not the first.

A reminder: best intentions mean NOTHING when it comes to animal care. You need knowledge, time, and the openness to be held accountable for mistakes. Anything other than that leads to unintentional neglect and unnecessary deaths, be they from neglect or trigger-happy euthanasia.

Pictured is the horrific reality of what can become of what you leave behind without a second thought.

Imagine having something wrapped so tightly around one of your digits, it eventually turns black and falls off. Thats what countless pigeons go through every day as they try to carve out an existence on our streets.

This is why we are asking you to cut any string like material in to short sections, unable to bind. Bag it for extra safety and lastly, bin it.

Simply binning reduces the risk but it doesn’t remove it completely as many pigeons are forced to scavenge for food in bins or materials can be blown out etc.

So please do your part and save some pigeon toes today.

Cut it. Bag it. Bin it.

IMPORTANT
We are temporarily changing our process for intakes.

Due to a prolonged period of illness, and added financial strain, we need to reevaluate how we run.

For the foreseeable future, we will only be taking pigeons from vets, other rescues, and rehabbers. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO SANCTUARY BIRDS. We will continue to offer a space to disabled pigeons, no matter who messages, if we believe we can meet their needs.

❗A permanent change we are making is that we will not be responding to comment tags. You can continue tagging us in posts as a way to direct people to our page, but we will not be checking or responding to these notifications.❗

Vet professionals
Earlier in the year, we emailed out our phone numbers to all vets across Gloucestershire with a publicly available email address. If you do not have this saved, please email [email protected] and we will share our numbers. You can contact us this way, or through our email, to refer pigeons to us.

Rehabbers and Rescues
Email us on [email protected]. We can take referrals this way and share our numbers.

Member of the public
Please get any injured or poorly pigeons to a wildlife friendly vet. Remind them they can refer onto us for continued care.

We know this might be disappointing. And we know there is a distrust between wildlife lovers and vets, but we have found many vets are willing to help as long as they know someone is able to offer continued support.

Our dedication has, and always will remain to be, to pigeons with long term recovery needs and disabled pigeons.

Larger rescues often cannot offer pigeons with illnesses like PMV or pox a place due to quarantine needs and recovery time. This means these birds are at high risk of euthanasia.

Many rescues do not believe in disabled animals living a vibrant and valued life in captivity. This means disabled birds are also at high risk of euthanasia.

Changing the way we take in pigeons for the time being will enable us to continue to save the lives of the most at risk birds.

Hello 👋

We are still unwell, and honestly it's really getting us down. We have been stuck in bed for almost 10 days now, only getting up to care for the pigeons and our companion animals. But we keep going for the birds!

Our limit for the number of pigeons in rescue is usually 10, depending on the needs of the birds. However, due to illness we have reduced this to 5. We are aware this is much lower, but if we were to take in any more we would be unable to support our companion animals, the pigeons, and ourselves alongside this horrendous flu 🤒

Space in rescue continues to be prioritised for pigeons who are at a high risk of euthanisa elsewhere (for example, pigeons recovering from avian pox).

🩺🕊 If you find a pigeon in need please get them to The Vale Wildlife Hospital or a trusted vet practice. SPA vets have a Wildlife Care Badge and are our trusted vet, but we also work with other vets across Gloucestershire. If you want to advocate for a pigeon when dropping them at a vet, feel free to mention us, show them our page/website, and say that if we have space we are happy to offer continued care for sick/injured pigeons. We don't share our numbers publically, but if you need it to give to a vet- pop us a message.

🚫🚗 We currently CANNOT offer any transport. We are occasionally able to find volunteers, but this isn't a gautentee.

❗️If you find an animal that is suffering it is your responsibility to get them seen by a professional. Not having transport and no one else being able to support is not a good enough reason to give up❗️

We frequently utalise taxi services for emergencies. If cost is a genuine barrier (as in you truly cannot afford to pay for a taxi for an animal in need, not that you just do not want to), we may be able to support or do a call around for donations.

Not all cases are emergency cases, and sometimes pigeons can wait a few hours or overnight to see a rehabber or vet. If you find yourself in one of these situations, make sure the pigeon is secured in a well ventilated box in a quiet area of your home and kept away from other animals- a bathroom usually works well. We don't advise leaving food or water down, as sometimes this can have catastrophic consequences, but it does depend on whats occurred and may at times be suitable. If you need advice on if it's an emergency, we may be able to offer guidance. Please note: it is not always easy to do this without seeing the bird first hand 🔍

Honestly, we've had a crappy few days. Both of us are down with flu, and the only reason we are getting out of bed is to care for the pigeons in rescue and sanctuary, and our companion animals.

Something that has been bringing us joy though is opening all the wonderful nests we've been sent from Wool for Rescues. When our friend Janey said she would put a post out for us, we didn't expect to receive so many so soon. In the van fire, we lost a bunch of our rescue belongings. One of which was a bag of freshly donated nests. We've been low on them ever since. It felt small in the grand scheme of all we lost, but we have struggled without them, and some birds have had to go without while the ones we did have were in the wash. I dont think we will be needing more for a long time!
