This day started months before we ever walked into the PICA office. šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡²

Applying for Jamaican citizenship wasnā€™t just about filling out paperwork. It took months of gathering documents, replacing a birth certificate, learning the process, and getting guidance from people who had already helped others navigate it.

When application day finally arrived, Wendell took us into St. Annā€™s Bay for the last few steps before Taji submitted her application. While she was inside, we waited nearby, hoping everything would go smoothly. A short time later, we got the text to come pick her up.

With the application officially submitted, we celebrated together, reflecting on everything it had taken to reach that moment.

A Jamaican and an American walked into a barā€¦

The first time Shane and Wendell met, they discovered they had something unexpected in commonā€”classic country music.

Whether itā€™s Hank Williams Jr., George Jones, or Tom T. Hall singing ā€œI Like Beer,ā€ they always seem to find another song they both know.

That shared love of music quickly turned into a genuine friendship.

Years later, that friendship became the foundation of Jamaica One Love Tours.

This wasnā€™t a business planā€”it grew out of friendship, trust, and a shared love for introducing families to the Jamaica weā€™ve come to love.

What began as a conversation about Jah soon turned into a conversation about Jamaican herbal traditions.

From cerasee to milk thistle, prickly lettuce, neem, and the plants people have trusted for generations, I realized we had more in common than I expected.

Different places. Different traditions. Common humanity .

One respectful conversation reminded me that travel isnā€™t just about seeing new placesā€”itā€™s about understanding the people who call them home. ā¤ļøšŸ‡ÆšŸ‡²

Some places donā€™t just welcome you. They remind you where your story began.

We visited Nine Mile, the birthplace and final resting place of Bob Marley, but this day became about much more than music.

As the reggae band played, Taji became emotional. Standing there, surrounded by the hills, history, and culture that shaped generations before her, this wasnā€™t just another stop on an itinerary. It was a connection to her roots and her motherā€™s roots.

One of the most meaningful moments was standing barefoot on Bob Marleyā€™s meditation rock. Not because we wanted a photo, but because we wanted to feel the place that inspired him. To slow down. To listen. To appreciate the people and places that came before us.

The photos near the end tell the rest of the story. They were taken in Castleton, the hometown where Tajiā€™s mother Claudette was raised. They show family, history, and the places that shaped the generations before us. They also remind us that the stories we inherit donā€™t end with usā€”they continue through our children and grandchildren.

This is why Jamaica means so much to our family.

And itā€™s why Jamaica One Love Tours has always been personal. What we share with our guests isnā€™t just transportation, attractions, or sightseeing. Itā€™s a love for the people, culture, history, and places that make Jamaica special.

We came to Jamaica to continue Tajiā€™s citizenship journey and spend time with family roots that run deep in St. Mary.

One of our most important stops was Castleton, Tajiā€™s motherā€™s hometown, where we were able to check on her godmother, Mrs. Mallett, who recently celebrated her 104th birthday. ā¤ļøšŸ‡ÆšŸ‡²

What we didnā€™t expect was getting news that our Airbnb had been sold while we were still staying there.

After a little scrambling and a last-minute pivot, we found ourselves checking into Moon Palace Jamaica.

And hereā€™s the part that made us smileā€¦

One of the team members we met at Moon Palace was also from Castleton. Not only did she know exactly where we had been visiting, she knew Mrs. Mallett personally.

In a week centered around family, heritage, and reconnecting with Jamaica, that moment felt like more than a coincidence. (I dont believe in coincidence.)

What started as a problem ended up becoming one of our favorite memories from the trip.

The beach was beautiful. The food was excellent. The coffee became part of our morning routine. Most importantly, it gave us a comfortable place to finish a journey that was about much more than a vacation.

Would we stay at Moon Palace Jamaica again?

Absolutely. šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡²ā¤ļø

My wife Tajiā€™s mother was born and raised in Jamaica, and this summer marked another important step in Tajiā€™s journey toward Jamaican citizenship.

Proud of her and excited to share more of this story in the chapters ahead.
