Mombasa Community Bike Ride Success Story
On 4th April 2026, we successfully hosted the Mombasa Community Bike Ride in Nyali, bringing together over 78 cyclists from different backgrounds and experience levels. The ride attracted beginners, recreational riders, and professional cyclists, all united by a common purpose: to promote two-wheel mobility as a sustainable and alternative mode of transport in Mombasa.
The event featured a 12km community ride across Nyali, providing participants with a unique opportunity to experience the evolving cycling infrastructure within the area. One of the highlights of the ride was the chance to test part of the upcoming cycling lane, which is currently about 40% complete, stretching from the Nyali Lights through Links Road to Naivas Kenol. With the support and guidance of officials from the County Government Department of Transport, riders were able to witness firsthand the progress being made toward building safer spaces for cyclists in the city.
For us, the event was more than just a ride—it was a celebration of the growing cycling movement in Mombasa. Over the past few years, the organization has worked tirelessly to build a vibrant cycling culture, and today the cycling community has grown to more than 300 active riders, many of whom discovered cycling through Bike Is Best’s programs and community activities.
Another encouraging milestone has been the increasing participation of women in cycling. As part of its mission to create an inclusive mobility ecosystem, Bike Is Best Kenya is currently working toward an ambitious goal of training more than 1,000 women by the end of the year to learn how to cycle and build confidence on the road. This initiative aims to empower women with a new skill while expanding access to affordable and sustainable mobility.
Since its inception, we`ve witnessed a remarkable shift in attitudes toward cycling in Mombasa. More people are now choosing bicycles for both short and long-distance travel, embracing cycling not only for recreation but also as a practical means of daily mobility. With the development of dedicated cycling lanes, the future of cycling in Mombasa looks promising.
