Missouri DOT Warns Truckers to Avoid Kansas City During FIFA World Cup — Hundreds of Thousands of Visitors and Massive Traffic Increase Expected June 11 Through July 19

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — The Missouri Department of Transportation is urging freight operators to plan alternate routes around Kansas City during the FIFA World Cup, warning that hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to cause sharply increased traffic across the state from June 11 through July 19, 2026.

Kansas City is serving as a host city for the tournament. MoDOT said traffic impacts will be greatest in and around Kansas City but may be felt statewide as visitors move between lodging, event venues, and tourist destinations.

"To help improve highway capacity during the games, MoDOT is also encouraging freight operators to plan alternate routes around Kansas City during heavy travel periods. Traffic may be elevated throughout Missouri as visitors move between cities and event sites, and adjusting travel patterns can help reduce delays," the agency said.

Nearly all state roadwork in the Kansas City region will be moved off the roadway during the tournament to maximize capacity on major routes. Operations centers will be staffed during all event periods to support coordinated messaging and provide timely travel information.

"This is a proud moment for Missouri, and it takes all of us working together to keep our roads safe," said MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger. "By planning ahead and staying alert to changing conditions, drivers can help ensure a smooth World Cup experience. When it comes to travel, a little teamwork goes a long way. That's how we'll celebrate a successful tournament for Missouri residents and visitors alike."

Truckers and freight operators are encouraged to check MoDOT's travel resources and plan ahead well before match days.

Good morning, ongoing blizzard conditions continue to make travel hazardous and dangerous across the state. Current 511wi.gov road conditions show many counties where travel is still not advised. Blowing snow, visibility and slick roads continue to be big concerns.

We urge you to limit your travel today in these areas to emergencies and only what’s necessary. 511wi.gov and the 511WI mobile app are great resources to know current road conditions, road closures, traffic incidents and traffic camera views. Stay safe out there.

NEWS RELEASE: Share this information far and wide - Stay home and stay safe! This is a rapidly evolving, life-threatening situation. Northern Wisconsin counties are severely impacted by the winter storm. Many roads are impassable and travel is not advised across the majority of northern counties.

Winter reminder: While snow is falling, roads will not be bare.

We have crews treating roadways around the clock during winter storms, but with the distance our plows cover our aim is to keep roads passable rather than completely free of ice and snow. We continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.

Please avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather. Pack an emergency travel kit and check 511PA for updates if you must be out on the roads.
