2. Sliding Tandems
Scale all heavy loads 40, 000lbs or more at a certified CAT SCALE to get your load within legal weight limits. You will need to slide your tandems from time to time. Your legal axel weights allowed are as follows:

Steers-12,000lbs or 12,500lbs if equipped with and APU

Drives-34,000lbs use scale in truck on dash as a guide if calibrated.

Trailer Tandems-34,000lbs use scale on trailer if calibrated as a guide.

The two main hole spacings you’ll find are 4 inches and 6 inches. You can estimate that you will move 250 pounds per hole for 4 inch spacing, and 400 pounds per hole for 6 inch spacing.

By sliding the trailer tandems forward, you will put more weight on the trailer tandems and take weight off the tractor’s drive axles. Conversely, by sliding the trailer tandems toward the rear of the trailer, you will take weight off the trailer tandems and put more weight onto the tractor’s drive axles.

3. Fifth Wheel Slide
Only slide your fifth wheel as a last resort if it will help get your load legal. Push the fifth wheel release button inside the tractor then proceed to slide the fifth wheel in the same manner you would slide your tandems and brace yourself for the abrupt impact!

4. Mountains/Stab Braking
Put truck into low gear 9-10 at a speed or about 45mph-55mph; before you reach the top of the hill. As you descend down the mountain apply the engine break to level 2 or 3 to hold your speed steady as you accelerate stab break 3 seconds on 3 seconds off! Alternate accordingly, meaning push and hold the foot brake for only 3 seconds then take your foot off the brake for 3 seconds, to keep for going to fast down the mountain, also to keep your breaks from overheating and or failing on you. Do not hold your foot on the brake too long VERY IMPORTANT!

5. Scales
Cat Scales are certified and located at most major truck stops Love’s, Pilot, Flying J, TA, PETRO

6. Weigh Stations/Pre-pass
each truck has a prepass it will either blink green or red letting you know whether or not you have to pull into the weigh station that you see or not if it does nothing then you must pull into the weigh station if it is open! When on the scale leave your yellow tractor valve pulled out and push in your red tractor vale so you can weigh less.

7. Inclement weather procedures increase following distance and reduce speed to nearly half depending on road conditions rain, snow, sleet, black ice increase your awareness and alertness. Do not use cruise control.

8. Safety
Always know what’s behind your trailer before you start backing. Do not walk in between trailers at night. Be vigilant at all times and be aware of your surroundings and lock your doors you are alone out here!

9. Time Management
Time is money! Managing your time out here is vital and a major factor on your success as a professional driver. Maximize your time when possible pick up and deliver loads on time the sooner the better the more loads you can do the more money you’ll make. Whenever possible sleep at your shippers and receivers if they have overnight parking. Make sure your trailer is fueled and clean before arriving to the shipper unless they have a trailer washout. Do your macro 19 for every load because the load information frequently has missing vital details about the load that will be contained in the macro 19 message.

10. Lumpers/Comchecks
you will pay for lumper fees (unloading fee customer charges) with either a digital express code or a paper Comcheck. For a digital code message your dispatcher and simply ask for an express code. For a paper check call Comdata at 800-741-6060 and follow the instructions to register the
Com check.

11. Customers/Shippers/Receivers You are a representation of New Prime Inc. please be respectful, patient and kind at all times. Even when the customer is rude to you or ignoring you at the window it is bound to happen yet we must always remain professional, as customers will and do report you to Prime if you are in anyway disrespectful to them.
