Fall is in full swing! It’s the season for enjoying the beautiful colored leaves and pumpkin spice everything. Take your loved ones outside to enjoy the season!

We’ve compiled a list of fall activity ideas that seniors can enjoy with the family to help you and your loved ones celebrate the season!

Bake a Pie 🥧
Pies are a big part of the autumn season, especially ones that are made with apples or pumpkins. One fun idea for an activity that you can enjoy is pie baking, especially if your senior loved one likes cooking food.

Go for a Hike 🥾
Going for a nature hike can be one way you and your loved one bond together this fall. If your loved one likes to take photos, this is an opportunity for them to capture some of autumn’s unique scenery on camera. There are many accessible trails that are wheelchair friendly.

Apple Picking 🍎
Apple picking is another fun activity that older adults can enjoy. There are many local farms that will allow you to pick apples directly off the trees, and the apples they offer will vary by the time of year.

Pumpkin Picking 🎃
Pumpkin picking is another fun activity that people of all ages can enjoy. You and your older loved one can visit a pumpkin patch to find the pumpkins that fit your needs. Once you have the pumpkins, you can bake fall treats or turn them into Halloween decorations.

Pumpkin Carving or Painting 🎨
Carved pumpkins are a popular way for people to decorate their porches. If your older loved one struggles with arthritis or doesn’t feel comfortable carving a pumpkin, consider painting the pumpkins instead. This is a way to enjoy the fun of decorating pumpkins without worrying about injuries.

Ride Simple Patient Shuttle Service wishes you a wonderful autumn season. If you need accessible transportation for any of these great activities, we can help! Call us today at 765.591.5291.

Please note, transportation for non-medical activities and outings are not eligible for Medicaid coverage and will be considered private payment services.

The risk of falling increases with age. Falls can be especially dangerous for older adults, often causing fractures, hospitalization, and disability. The good news is that many falls are avoidable.

Tips for Avoiding Falls

Stay physically active. Regular exercise improves muscles and makes you stronger.

Try balance and strength training exercises. Yoga, Pilates, and tai chi can all improve balance and muscle strength.

Fall-proof your home. Make changes to your home that will help you avoid falls and ensure your safety.

Have your eyes and hearing tested. Even small changes in sight and hearing are linked to an increased risk for falls.

Find out about the side effects of any medicines you take. If a drug makes you sleepy or dizzy, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Get enough sleep. If you are tired, you are more likely to fall.

Stand up slowly. Getting up too quickly can cause your blood pressure to drop. That can make you feel wobbly.

Use an assistive device if you need help feeling steady when you walk. Using canes and walkers correctly can help prevent falls.

Take extra caution when walking on wet or icy surfaces. These can be very slippery! Use an ice melt product or sand to clear icy areas by your doors and walkways.

Keep your hands free. Use a shoulder bag, f***y pack, or backpack to leave your hands free to hold on to railings.

Choose the right footwear. To fully support your feet, wear nonskid, rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes. Don’t walk on stairs or floors in socks or in shoes and slippers with smooth soles.

Consider staying inside when the weather is bad, or using a shuttle service. Some community services provide 24-hour delivery of prescriptions and groceries, and many take orders over the phone.

Always tell your doctor if you have fallen since your last check-up, even if you did not feel pain when you fell. A fall can alert your doctor to a new medical problem or issues with your medications or eyesight that can be corrected. Your doctor may suggest physical therapy, a walking aid, or other steps to help prevent future falls.

🌟 Safety Tips for Seniors Using Canes 🌟

Starting to use a cane can be a big adjustment. Here are some essential tips to ensure safety and confidence:

Correct Height: Make sure your cane is the right height. When standing, the top should reach the crease of your wrist.

Proper Use: Use the cane on the opposite side of your weaker leg for better support.

Safe Footwear: Wear shoes with non-slip soles and good support. Avoid slippers and high heels.

Home Safety: Clear pathways of tripping hazards like loose rugs and cords. Keep areas well-lit.

Stair Navigation: Always hold the handrail. Place the cane on the step first, followed by your weaker leg, then the stronger leg.

Regular Check-ups: Check your cane for wear and tear. Ensure the rubber tip is intact.

Exercise: Engage in strength and balance exercises to improve mobility.

Consult a Professional: If unsure, consult a physical therapist for personalized guidance.

Stay safe and confident with your cane! 💪👵👴
