Things I’m Proud of Now That I’m Older: A Lint-free List 🏆

When I was 25, I felt accomplished if I closed a big deal or got a standing ovation. Now? Let me tell you about my week.

âś… I loaded the dishwasher like a game of Tetris. Bowls on top, plates in back, not one spoon spooning another spoon. I stood there afterward, admiring it like it was the Sistine Chapel. I almost took a picture. Okay, I took a picture.

✅ I peeled the lint from the dryer in ONE piece, with ONE finger. A perfect gray felt rectangle. No tearing. No crumbs. If they gave out Olympic medals for this, I’d be on a Wheaties box by now.

âś… My kitchen countertop is completely clear. No mail, no keys, no mystery charger that belongs to nothing. Just bare granite, gleaming. I walk past it several times a day just to feel something.

✅ I matched every black sock. Not “close enough” black. Not “navy, but in this light, who’ll know” black. Actual pairs, by thickness AND elastic fatigue. This is the closest I’ll ever come to winning a Nobel Prize.

âś… I replaced the toilet paper roll before it was empty. Proactively. Like a hero no one asked for.

Younger me would be horrified by all this. Older me says younger me never got the lint out in one piece.

What tiny victory made YOU unreasonably proud this week?

From the mouth of Dick Van D**e who is about to turn 101 on December 13th: “I am a child in search of his inner adult, though the truth is that I'm not searching too hard. I don't recommend anyone doing so. That is the secret, the one people always ask me about when they see me singing and dancing, whistling my way through the grocery store or doing a soft shoe in the checkout line. They say, 'Pardon me, Mr. Van D**e, but you seem so happy. What's your secret?' What they really want to know is how I have managed to grow old, even very old, without growing up, and the answer is this: I haven't grown up. I play. I dance with my inner child. Every day." — from Dick Van D**e's book, “Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths About Aging"

Dick Van D**e opens up about what it's been like to live to 100 years old.

STILL LAUGHING JOKE OF THE DAY:
My husband and I purchased an old home in Northern New York State from two elderly sisters. Winter was fast approaching and I was concerned about the house's lack of insulation. "If they could live here all those years, so can we!" my husband confidently declared. One November night the temperature plunged to below zero, and we woke up to find interior walls covered with frost. My husband called the sisters to ask how they had kept the house warm.
After a rather brief conversation, he hung up.
"For the past 30 years," he muttered, "they've gone to Florida for the winter."

STILL LAUGHING JOKE OF THE DAY:
A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played fast, he could get in nine holes before heading home. Just as he was about to tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old gent to join him.
To his surprise, the old man played fairly quickly. He didn't hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn't waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball — and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot, the old man finally said, "You know, when I was your age I'd hit the ball right over that tree." With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk, and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay.

The old man offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only three feet tall."

OLDER N' BOLDER THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Why does psychoanalysis work quicker with men than with women?
Because when it's time to return to one’s childhood, the man is already there.
