Half good news for our industry: Overnight the government confirmed discounts to the fuel excise and heavy vehicle road user charge will be extended by another month, however reduced 50%.

From the 1st of July, expect pump prices and overall costs to jump 16c per litre, so still aim to refuel absolutely everything and order bulk fuel deliveries just before the 30th of June.

Following the announcement by the Fair Work Commission, award rates will increase by 4.75%, which, as a rough guide will see casual rates increase by $1.59 per hour at minimum. Adding on-costs at a multiplication of 1.5, factor in an increase in driver costs to a business at $2.38 per hour at minimum.

Therefore, on say an 8 hour day on a 100km round trip with the bus using 40L/100kms, this is a cost increase of $6.40 for fuel and $19.04 in staff costs compared to a job on the 30th of June if you are paying at base award rates*.

* Increases may be higher if you are paying above award conditions
* Does not apply to operators using sham contracting.

The life of a bus operator…. Running heavy vehicles means taking significant risk and long days are an industry norm. This week we had a bus damaged on a terrible, narrow dirt road which was undergoing maintenance and gave way slightly. You’ll notice it is rare to see one of our fleet running around damaged, so it was straight to the panelshop to get it back on the road. The tip of the week for operators: understand risk and factor unexpected damage into your margins.

Buy Australian they said!! Overall we’re relatively impressed with the Custom Coaches SB50 body though some bits and pieces are impossible to buy. With Customs falling into administration twice, it was no surprise a lot of suppliers who were burnt refused to continue making spares. Our latest problem, a rubber insert required to hide the hinge. Why this design was chosen which dates the vehicle and traps dirt and moisture is anyone’s guess?

This week’s episode of Workshop Woes, an early Volvo B7R with the trusty and dependable D7B motor had an audible boost leak. Never a powerhouse from new, we had to come up with a solution when all our spares wouldn’t fit…….

It's hard to believe that exactly 20 years ago to the date I would have been driving a manual DAF SB4000 on my first ever tour around Europe.

The Bus & Coach Industry has given me opportunities I could never have dreamed of. And it all just happened rather accidently. Had you asked me in junior high what I wanted to be, I would have said a car designer. Through middle high school, I would have said a car mechanic. By the end of high school, I would have said a long distance trucker. But of course my education and upbringing meant I accepted a scholarship and studied IT. With money from the scholarship, I got my bus license just to tick it off my bucket list and was shocked when someone actually gave me a job as a 19 year old.

Fast forward a few years, and after 3 years in corporate, I took a career break and took on the most enjoyable job I ever had: Driving tour coaches around Europe with Topdeck. Catering for 18 to 35 year olds, Topdeck ran camping, hostel and hotel tours. Starting from London, tours would cover countries as far east as Turkey, up through Moscow, to the tip of Norway, back down towards Spain and pretty much every country in-between. Topdeck operated its last coach tour in 2026, switching to small group tours. I've included some highlight bus photos, each with captions to give you an idea of the job.

The point of the post? Life takes you on a journey you could never have planned.

Here’s our tip of the week: when refurbing the interior of a bus, the keyword is colour co-ordination. Mis-matching seat trim with the roof and wall linings can dramatically age a bus. But what is with some trim designs and who actually comes up with some of these designs?

Apologies for the delay, but here is Part 2 of our bendy bus project as we drive it out to our panelshop. The Volvo B10MA with rear steer is an extremely easy bus to drive forwards. It’s not so good going in reverse. With a trusty DH10A motor and 5-speed ZF automatic it performs adequately all the while doing it with the refinement and smoothness you’d expect from a Volvo. We’ll try to do a few progress reports along the way.
