Reminder that Term 2 has begun, and school bus services have now resumed.

Please help us keep kids safe and SLOW DOWN to 40 Kph in school zones and whenever the bus lights flash.

For school children, the highest risk period is often the minutes after getting off the bus.

Meet children on the same side of the road as the bus stop and never call them across the road. Supervise young children near traffic — particularly those under 10 — and encourage them to sit quickly and buckle up if seatbelts are provided.

Planning ahead, especially when starting a new school or using a rural stop, helps reduce risk.

Today marks the start of Bus Safety Week 2026 — a reminder that safety around buses is a shared responsibility across our communities.

Every day in NSW, buses carry thousands of passengers, including school children. While buses are one of the safest modes of transport, they are large, heavy vehicles and can’t stop quickly.

For motorists, small actions make a big difference:
• Leave at least a 3-second gap behind a bus
• Don’t merge too closely in front
• Slow to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing (unless a lower limit applies)
• Remember blind spots — if you can’t see the mirrors, the driver can’t see you

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing safety reminders for all road users.

Together, we can help ensure every bus journey across NSW is a safe one.

School is back next week!

🚘🎒 Reminder for all drivers that school zones are in force from next week as Term 1 kicks off in NSW.

➡️ Eastern division from 27 January 2026
⬅️ Western division from 3 February 2026

🤔 Ever heard of informal bus stops? 🚍

🌾 In rural and regional areas, school children may be dropped off and picked up at temporary bus stops that don't have any signage or infrastructure - they're often just the end of a driveway or residence 🚏

🚗 When driving on country roads remember to keep a look out for children who may be waiting for their bus or crossing the road to get to their stop 🚸

If your child gets the bus from an informal stop, accompany them if you can and hold their hand when crossing the road. If they're old enough, have a conversation with them about how to cross safely ✅

🚍👀 Think the bus driver can see you in their side mirrors? Think again!

Due to their large size, buses have bigger blind spots than other vehicles. Give way and extra space to buses, take extra care when changing lanes around buses and never assume that the driver has seen you.

We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2026!

🪧 In NSW, there are thousands of informal school bus stops (just like this one!), particularly in rural and regional areas.

They may not be marked with signage or infrastructure, so drivers must...

💡Look out for flashing lights on the back of the bus advising that school kids are being picked up or dropped off
✋ Slow down to 40km/h
🏃 Be aware that kids may run onto the road from in front of or behind the bus

20/10/2025

Now that school is back for Term 4, remember to take extra care around school buses and school zones 🚸

🚍 Slow down to 40km/h when bus lights flash
✅ Stay under school zone speed limits
👀 Watch for children near bus stops
✋ Give way to buses merging into traffic
