Today, on this Ill Full Moon Poya, we commemorate several significant events in Buddhist history. It marks the end of the Vassana (rains) retreat and celebrates the Bodhisatta Maitriya receiving Vivarana (the assurance of future Buddhahood).

This day also signifies the commissioning of the first 60 disciples by the Lord Buddha to spread the Dhamma and the laying of the foundation for Thuparamaya, the first stupa in Sri Lanka.
