⚠️ A MESSAGE TO PROPERTY OWNERS GETTING QUOTES FOR EARTHWORKS & LAND CLEARING

Something happened on one of our projects this week that I believe is worth talking about.

We had a substantial project booked with a customer for approximately three months. Our quotation was $43,000, with the works scheduled, machinery allocated, haulage organised and the required time blocked out.

The customer understandably decided to seek a second opinion before we commenced. We have absolutely no issue with that — customers should compare quotes and make sure they are comfortable with who they engage.

However, only two days before we were due to start, we received a message cancelling the project.

Because the cancellation fell inside our 7-day cancellation period, after months of planning and allocating resources to the project, our cancellation terms applied.

The customer subsequently decided to proceed with us as originally scheduled.
And this is where the story gets interesting.

On the first day, Matthew and I got straight into the project — clearing substantial trees, preparing the property for a large shed and new driveways, and commencing the cut-and-fill earthworks into the hillside.

By the end of that first day, the customer told us how impressed he was with the amount of work completed, how efficiently we operated and how organised our entire operation was.

He told us he was extremely happy that he had ultimately chosen to proceed with CHT Excavation.

I then asked him why he had originally cancelled.

The customer explained that another contractor who had looked at the project had spoken negatively about our business while attempting to secure the work themselves.
I won't name the company involved, and this post isn't about starting an argument between local businesses.

But I do want property owners to be aware that this happens.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting two, three or even more quotations. In fact, on substantial projects, we encourage customers to do their homework.

But compare contractors on what actually matters:
✅ Get a detailed written quotation, not simply a verbal figure.
✅ Compare exactly what is included and excluded.
✅ Look at the contractor's machinery and whether they actually own the equipment required to complete the job.
✅ Look at previous projects and genuine customer reviews.
✅ Check licences and insurance where applicable.
✅ Consider mobilisation, haulage, materials, disposal and the complete scope — not just the headline price.
✅ Most importantly, judge a contractor by their own work, not by what another contractor says about them.

At CHT Excavation Group & Forestry Mulching NSW, we'd rather win a project because a customer has looked at our equipment, experience, written quotation and previous results — not because we've criticised somebody else.

Competition is part of business. We respect that.

Trying to win work by tearing another local business down is something different.
After everything that happened, the most satisfying part was hearing our customer say after seeing us work that he was happy he'd chosen us.

That's ultimately what matters.
