Whale-watching season is almost here, and from July to September the waters surrounding Magnetic Island become a highway for some of the ocean's most magnificent visitors โ humpback whales.
Each year, thousands of humpbacks undertake an incredible migration from the freezing waters of Antarctica to the warmer waters of Queensland, where they breed, calve and nurture their young before beginning the journey south once again.
For visitors and locals alike, it's one of the most spectacular natural events of the year. Keep an eye on the horizon and you may be lucky enough to witness a breach, a playful tail slap, or the unmistakable sight of a whale's blow rising above the water.

While whales can be spotted throughout the season, July and August are typically the best months to catch the action around Magnetic Island and the Townsville region.

The marine encounters don't stop with whales. You may also spot dolphins, sea turtles, rays, and even the elusive dugong as you explore our tropical waters.
Whether you're joining a tour, watching from a scenic lookout, or enjoying a ferry trip across the bay, whale season is a magical reminder of just how special this part of North Queensland really is.
