UPS Inc. faces a challenging start to the year, with first-quarter revenue of $22.9 billion, down 6% YoY. As a result, UPS adjusted its full-year results to touch the low end of expectations. The company is looking for a better second half than the first half. Tomé, the CEO of UPS, raised the value of the UPS Store, the retail storefront chain with 5,100 locations. She touted the Store’s density as a super-convenient way to drop off or return a package.

Like other carriers, UPS is being hit by a shift in disposable income from goods to services, and a growing percentage of the goods are low-margin foodstuffs that are typically ordered in a store. Tomé voiced optimism that a threatened Aug. 1 strike by the Teamsters union could be avoided. The negotiations for a national master contract began a week ago Monday.

Will Amazon Take Over UPS Deliveries During Potential Strike?

Amazon's plans to extend its delivery services to businesses outside of retail have been put on hold due to the pandemic, but it may be re-engaging in the process now.

Experts predict that if a potential Teamsters union strike against UPS occurs, it could result in permanent market share loss for UPS and permanent wins for others.

Amazon, who is UPS' largest customer by revenue, could bring that business in-house for delivery via its delivery partners. This would translate to 1.85 million parcels per day, about 9% of UPS' overall daily U.S. volumes.

Despite differing opinions on Amazon's capability to pick up the slack as a last-mile delivery company, some believe that Amazon will make a play for UPS' business on the outbound delivery side.

Boom! Our latest post in our weekly series on "How to Save Money in Shipping." This week's topic is shipping insurance, which is a crucial aspect of protecting your shipments in case of loss or damage.

It's important to understand that shipping insurance covers the replacement cost of lost or damaged items, not the value that those items that were sold.

This means that when you declare the value of your shipment for insurance purposes, you should specify the amount that it would cost to replace the items, not the price that you sold them for.

For example, if you're shipping a product that you purchased for $100 but would cost $150 to replace, you should declare a value of $150 for insurance purposes. This ensures that you will be reimbursed for the full cost of replacing the item if it is lost or damaged in transit.

It's also important to note that some carriers may have restrictions on the types of items that can be insured or may require additional documentation to process insurance claims. Make sure to check with your carrier to understand their specific requirements and restrictions.

By understanding the importance of shipping insurance and properly declaring the replacement value of your items, you can ensure that your shipments are protected and avoid costly losses. We hope this information was helpful, and we look forward to sharing more shipping tips with you in the coming weeks!

Have you ever wondered how shipping companies handle customs clearance for international shipments? Customs clearance is the process of ensuring that all applicable customs regulations are met before a shipment can be released into a country. This process can be complex and time-consuming. Here are a few key things to keep in mind about customs clearance:

1. Every country has its customs regulations, and these regulations can vary widely depending on the type of goods being shipped, the value of the shipment, and the destination country.

2. It's important to provide accurate and detailed information about your shipments, including the type and quantity of goods, their value, and their country of origin. Providing incomplete or inaccurate information can cause delays or even result in your shipment being seized by customs officials.

3. Some shipments may require additional documentation or permits, such as import licenses or certificates of origin. Make sure to check the requirements for your specific shipment before you send it.

4. Customs officials may inspect your shipment to ensure that it complies with all applicable regulations. This inspection can include a physical examination of the goods, as well as a review of any accompanying documentation.

By understanding the customs clearance process and ensuring that you provide accurate and complete information about your shipments, you can help ensure that your international shipments arrive safely and on time.

DHL Express has launched a new service called GoGreen Plus, which enables customers to reduce the carbon emissions associated with their shipments by utilizing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The service is the first of its kind offered by global express carriers and will be initially available in the UK, followed by several other countries including Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. This flexible service is designed to allow customers to choose individual shipments, thereby tailoring their CO2e reduction targets and the amount of SAF they use.

In the coming months, DHL Express customers worldwide will have access to the GoGreen Plus service. SAF, the primary route to reducing carbon emissions in aviation, is derived from waste oils and will be supplied to DHL Express hubs around the world, thanks to the company's recent collaborations with bp and Neste.

The innovative fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to the conventional jet fuel it replaces. Insetting through GoGreen Plus enables customers to reduce their Scope 3 emissions, which are the indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur in a company's value chain, including downstream transportation and distribution. The service is different from offsetting initiatives as it reduces emissions within the logistics sector and can be used for voluntary emission reporting, following the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) philosophy.

According to John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, the GoGreen Plus service empowers customers to reduce their environmental impact. SAF is currently the most effective way to help customers make their supply chains more sustainable. The service is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group's Sustainability Roadmap, which aims to offer a green alternative for all products and services across all divisions. This initiative aligns with the Group's sustainability goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and the interim target of using 30% SAF for all air transport by 2030.

The GoGreen Plus service is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the logistics sector, and DHL Express is leading the way in this regard. By leveraging the benefits of SAF, DHL Express customers can achieve their sustainability targets and make their supply chains more environmentally friendly.

Great news everyone! We're excited to announce our new weekly series called "How to Save Money in Shipping". Every Tuesday, we'll share tips and tricks to help you optimize your shipping.

Today's topic is the importance of volume weight. As many of you know, volume weight is a key factor in determining shipping costs, especially for small parcels. But what exactly is volume weight, and why is it so important to understand?

Volume weight, also known as dimensional weight, is a way of measuring the "bulkiness" of a package, taking into account both its size and weight. The formula for calculating volume weight is (length x width x height) / divisor, where the divisor is a number that varies depending on the shipping carrier's rules and regulations.

So why must volume weight be understood? Well, shipping carriers use the greater of either the actual weight or volume weight to calculate the cost of shipping a package. This means that if you have a lightweight, bulky package, you're likely paying for the size of your package instead of the weight.

Here's how you calculate volume weight on your own packages, let's say you have a package that is 12 inches long, 10 inches wide, and 8 inches high and weighs 5 pounds (12''x10''x8'' 5lbs). The divisor for your shipping carrier is 139. To calculate the volume weight, you would multiply all 3 sides (12x10x8 = 960), and then divide that by 166. The result is 5.78, which means that the volume weight of your package is 5.78 pounds. If the actual weight of your package is less than 5.78 pounds, you will be charged based on the size of your package.

Understanding volume weight is crucial for anyone who ships small parcels on a regular basis, as it can help you avoid unnecessary shipping costs and make more informed decisions about packaging and shipping. We hope this information was helpful, and we look forward to sharing more shipping tips with you in the coming weeks!

Top 5 points to remember when shipping anything!

- Choose the Right Packaging
Choosing the right packaging is key to ensuring that your products arrive at their destination safely and intact. When selecting packaging, consider the nature of the product, the distance it will travel, and the shipping method used. For fragile items, use packaging materials such as bubble wrap, foam, or peanuts to provide extra protection. For larger items, use sturdy boxes or crates to prevent damage during transit. Additionally, ensure that the packaging is labeled correctly and includes the recipient's address and contact information.

- Determine the Best Shipping Method
Choosing the best shipping method for your products is crucial to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery. The most common shipping methods include ground, air, and sea shipping. Ground shipping is ideal for short distances and low-value items, while air and sea shipping is better suited for longer distances and high-value items. When selecting a shipping method, consider factors such as delivery time, cost, and tracking options. Additionally, ensure that you understand the shipping regulations for the countries you will be shipping to.

- Calculate Shipping Costs
Calculating shipping costs is a crucial aspect of the shipping process. It is essential to accurately calculate shipping costs to ensure that you are not undercharging or overcharging customers. Factors that influence shipping costs include the weight and size of the package, the shipping method used, and the distance traveled. To avoid surprises, use a shipping calculator to estimate shipping costs and incorporate them into your pricing structure.

- Provide Excellent Customer Service
Providing excellent customer service is key to building long-term relationships with your customers. Keep your customers informed about their shipment's progress by providing them with tracking information and estimated delivery times. Be responsive to customer inquiries and address any issues promptly. Additionally, ensure that your shipping policies are clear and easy to understand.

- Streamline Your Shipping Process
Streamlining your shipping process can save you time and money and improve your overall efficiency. Use shipping software to automate shipping processes such as label printing, order processing, and tracking. Additionally, consider outsourcing your shipping to a third-party logistics provider (3PL) to handle your shipping needs, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your business.

Have you ever wondered which shipping method is best for your business: air freight or ocean freight? Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the decision ultimately depends on your unique shipping needs.

Air freight is generally faster and more reliable, but it can be more expensive, especially for larger and heavier shipments. On the other hand, ocean freight is slower but more cost-effective for larger shipments, especially for international shipping.

When choosing between air and ocean freight, it's important to consider factors such as your budget, timeline, and the type of goods you're shipping.

So, which one is right for your business? The answer depends on a variety of factors, but with careful consideration and planning, you can choose the shipping method that best meets your needs and helps your business grow.
