What happens when a footbridge becomes a ‘wobbly’ bridge ?

The London Millennium Footbridge was opened in June 2000. The first bridge to be built in central London for over 100 years.

On its opening it saw around 100,000 crossings. Its popularity caused the bridge to start swaying under the footfall pressure, giving rise to its nickname ‘The Wobbly Bridge’ so after 2 days of it opening, it had to be closed.

It was reopened 18 months later after engineers worked out how to ‘dampen’ the swaying of the bridge.

What links The Beatles to the composer Edward Elgar ?

In 1929 a house in St John’s Wood was bought by The Gramophone Co. to support the new industry of electrical recording. The company then merged with Columbia Graphophone to create Electrical and Musical Industries (EMI) and the musical sound studios on Abbey Road, in 1931, was opened.

Sir Edward Elgar performed there with The London Symphony Orchestra at the grand opening. Since then, the studios have become world leading in musical sound creation for musicians and artists.

Most notable of these were The Beatles, who along with producer George Martin, recorded 190 of their 210 songs there. Their last recorded album they created was named after the road. The album cover features the fab 4 walking over the zebra crossing, which has been imitated by tourists ever since.

The Court, The Prison and The Pub !

The Central Criminal Court building, commonly known as the ‘The Old Bailey’ was built in 1907 and opened by King Edward VII. A Court (Sessions) House has been situated on Old Bailey since the 1530s.

The existing building replaced the infamous Newgate Prison that had stood on the site for over 700 years. One of my photos shows part of the prison wall that is still standing today.

Today, directly opposite is The Magpie and Stump Pub which, in one form or another, has been there for over 300 years. It was a popular place for people to view public executions outside the prison and where the condemned, would receive in their cell ‘a last pint’, delivered from the pub.

When does a few make a massive difference ?

The Battle of Britain was won by less than 3000 RAF pilots, ‘The Few’, who repelled the German Luftwaffe in 1940 and the fabulous memorial on The Embankment commemorates that.

However it would not have happened without two great men conducting this victory.

Sir Hugh Dowding, was the visionary mastermind in setting up the strategic air defence of the whole UK in readiness of any German onslaught. His statue is on the Strand.

Sir Keith Park was the air commander who was responsible for the whole southeast of England and nicknamed ‘Defender of London’. His tactical genius and use of his resources in waging the fight was pivotal in Britain prevailing. His statue is on Waterloo Place.

Probably the most famous detective in the world !!!!!!

Sherlock Holmes is synonymous with Victorian London. His fictional address, 221b Baker Street is quaintly recreated and is quite a tourist attraction.

His creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, wrote the detective stories over the course of 40 years beginning in 1887 with ‘A Study In Scarlet’.

He wrote some of them while trying to earn a living as an ophthalmologist nearby in Upper Wimpole Street. He didn’t receive many patients so had plenty of time to pen the stories and because of their popularity, made him one the richest authors at the time.

Why was it not a good idea to defy the King ?

The Tower Scaffold that was situated on Tower Hill, now marked by a small garden commemorating the people executed there, was the preeminent site for executions of noble-men, women and church clergy who were convicted as traitors.

This was especially so during Henry VIII’s reign when he renounced the Church of Rome to become head of the Church of England.

Bishop John Fisher and Sir Thomas More were two individuals amongst the first group of prisoners who had defied the King and paid with their lives in June and July of 1535. These Matyrs are commemorated across numerous places, including at my local church, St Joseph’s and the English Martyrs.

What does the statue of Eros represent?

Following on from my previous post about Piccadilly Circus, the statue of Eros is a focal point, but it is NOT dedicated to the Greek god of love. Unveiled in 1893, it was built by funds raised from public donations to honour the ‘7th Earl of Shaftesbury’ for his good works over the course of his lifetime.

His name was Anthony Ashley Cooper and he introduced a lot of social and industrial reform to the huge benefit of women, children and workers throughout the 1800s.

Among the many changes he brought about through was that he created the Ragged Schools system that provided free education for 300,000 impoverished children.

When was the London Wall built?

The London Wall was constructed by the Roman’s starting in the 2nd century. It took around 30 years to build, standing 20 feet high, 8 feet thick at its base and 2.5 miles long surrounding the Roman settlement. A river wall along the Thames was completed 45 years later to complete the enclosure of the city.

The city was accessed by 5 city gates, Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Aldersgate, Newgate and Ludgate at points along the wall. Another gate, Cripplegate, was to allow access to the Roman fort there. Moorgate, another access point was added later, in the early 1400s. The largest remaining section of the old Roman Wall which stands at its full medieval height of over 30 feet, is situated down at Tower Hill.

What’s with Piccadilly Circus and L.E.D. Advertising Boards?

The Piccadilly Circus junction was built in 1819 to link Piccadilly and Regent St. It was reconfigured in the 1880s to incorporate the newly built Shaftesbury Ave with shops and The London Pavilion built on that section of the circus.

In the 1910 those shop owners took financial advantage of advertisers who wanted their new electrical signage mounted on the shop fronts. This was repeated again in 1923 when a large electrical advertisement was mounted, covering the front of The London Pavilion.

There is no other electronic signage mounted around the rest of the Circus as the leases given in 1819 by The Crown, to developers were worded so it could not be permitted.
