What Self-Packing Materials are best for Fragile Items? 📦⚠️
Many people worry about expensive or sentimental items getting broken/damaged on moving day and unfortunately, accidents do happen, we’re all human.
The best way to minimise risk and ensure your fragile items make it to your new home in one piece is to pack them safely and correctly.
Using the right packing materials and taking your time when packing can make a big difference! Even if your move happens to be last-minute, you should never rush your packing, this some of your prized possessions you will have collected over your life span after all.
If you’re at the pre-packing stage of your move and are wondering which packing materials are best to use for fragile items, we have listed a few that we consider essential below:
Bubble Wrap 🫧
Bubble wrap is a must-have although not environmentally friendly and should therefore be recycled responsibly after your move is finished.
This material is extremely protective, it is ideal to wrap around your fragile items and the air-pockets are a great shock absorbent whilst your items are both being handled and are in transit.
Packing Paper 🗞️
Packing paper is an essential to wrap your fragile items in when moving!
This cost effective option is usually cheap to buy and is fully recyclable, this material will also ensure your possessions get from A to B intact and in one piece.
It is also useful to use packing paper to stuff items such as vases, glassware and mugs whilst also being a good material to fill empty spaces in your boxes to prevent your possessions being loose and moving around in transit.
Picture Cartons 🖼️
Picture cartons are cardboard boxes which are designed to fit picture frames, their purpose is to keep them safe and secure from damage whilst in transit.
Picture cartons are a versatile packing material in that they can protect most wall hanging items such as picture frames, artwork and mirrors.
For extra safe measures with your treasured pictured memories or favourite pieces of art we would suggest a layer of packing paper or bubble wrap before you place a picture carton.
Strong Cardboard Boxes 📦
Old cardboard boxes from local shops or supermarkets usually save money but sometimes don’t cut the mustard when it comes to being packed, handled and moved meaning an increased risk of damaged possessions.
Whilst these boxes are generally okay for day-to-day items, you should never put your fragile items in them. There’s a high chance that these pre-used cardboard boxes could break at some point during your move and this can risk in everything inside them getting broken too.
It’s worthwhile purchasing a mix of small, medium and large, high-quality, strong and durable cardboard boxes for your fragile, expensive and sentimental items….if not all.
Fragile & Packing Tape 📦
We recommended the use of fragile packing tape for boxes containing any breakable items and also the use of standard packing tape to close your boxes up both of which are inexpensive.
