With the new school term just around the corner, we know many parents are busy getting everything ready for their children returning to school.

At Local Cars, we are now taking pre-bookings and regular school run bookings for the new term.

We specialise in school transport, providing a reliable door-to-door service, consistent drivers and support for parents and children throughout the school year.

🚘 SEN SCHOOL TRANSPORT 🚘

Over the years, we have had the privilege of transporting many SEN children to and from special schools. We understand how important consistency, reliability and familiar drivers can be for children and their families. We understand your concerns on transport.

With the new term approaching and Bradford Council currently retendering all transport runs, some families may find that Local Cars is no longer their allocated transport provider. While this is understandably disappointing, we would like to thank every parent we have worked with for your support and for allowing us to provide the best quality service we could. We couldn’t have done this without you.

‼️BRADFORD’S LARGEST SCHOOL TRANSPORT PROVIDER ISSUES IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ITS DRIVERS - read & share your thoughts

As Bradford Council begins allocating school transport runs for the new academic year, Local Cars Bradford has sent a message to its drivers to explain why it has chosen not to lower its pricing structure or standards, rather than accept rates it believes are financially unsustainable.

In the message which was forwarded to PHTM by one of the drivers, the company says it will “not race to the bottom” on school transport contracts if doing so risks the financial sustainability of its drivers or the quality and reliability of the service provided to children.

🔴 A FOCUS ON SEND CHILDREN:
Local Cars says school transport is not simply another journey.
For SEND and vulnerable children, having a familiar driver, being collected on time and maintaining a consistent routine throughout the school year can be extremely important.

The company says it would rather operate fewer school runs at realistic rates than accept contracts at prices that could make it difficult to maintain those standards.

🔴 DRIVERS MUST ALSO MAKE IT PAY:
Local Cars says drivers are central to providing a reliable service and school runs must be financially worthwhile for them too.

The company acknowledges that drivers may be approached by other operators offering school transport work and ,while it has no intention of preventing drivers working elsewhere, reminds them that Local cars pay drivers weekly, despite sometimes waiting up to eight weeks itself to receive payment for account work.

It also urges drivers to consider the true cost of taking on school contracts including fuel, insurance, vehicle running costs, their time, and the planned requirement for CCTV to be installed in all school contract vehicles from January 2027.

“QUALITY SHOULD NOT BE SACRIFICED FOR PRICE.”

🔴 A WIDER CONCERN:
There is also a wider question about whether operators accepting school transport work actually have the drivers, vehicles and resources available to fulfil them.

If a firm doesn’t have the drivers or availability to provide a service, should it really be advertising on social media for resources to cover a council contract it has already accepted?
And shouldn’t a council consider an operator’s actual capacity to deliver the work before allocating it, rather than relying on operators finding the necessary resources afterwards?

Ultimately, the priority must be a reliable, properly resourced, and consistently covered transport service – particularly when vulnerable and SEND children are involved.

🔴 THE BIGGER QUESTION…
Should Bradford Council be looking more closely not only at the prices being accepted, but also whether operators actually have the drivers, vehicles and capacity to deliver those contracts reliably throughout the school year?

‼️ Local Cars says sustainable prices, committed drivers and consistent care for children must come before simply securing another contract.

This morning at approximately 8:30am, we had a booking from Odsal to Ilkley with an estimated fare of around £40.

Our driver collected two adult females and five or six children. As a gesture of trust, and believing there was no reason to request payment in advance, he proceeded with the journey without taking pre-payment, despite it being an out-of-area booking where we would usually do so.

Just a few minutes before reaching the destination, the adult passengers suddenly alleged that the driver had been asleep while driving and instructed him to stop and let them out. They then left the vehicle without paying the fare.

As they walked away, some of the teenagers, believed to be around 14 or 15 years old, made offensive gestures towards our driver and laughed at him.

All of our vehicles are fitted with CCTV, and the entire journey has been recorded. The footage has been retained and the matter was reported to the police. We were advised that it is a civil matter and that no further action would be taken by them.

We are extremely disappointed that one of our drivers has been treated in this manner while simply doing his job. Incidents like this have a real impact on small local businesses and hardworking drivers.

We will now be reviewing our policy and will require payment in advance for out-of-area journeys to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Our question is this: should we publish the CCTV footage and identify those responsible, or should we simply accept the loss and move on?

It can be difficult to keep every customer happy all the time, no matter how hard we try.

Due to Eid celebrations, many of our drivers are spending time with their families and loved ones. Because of this, we are extremely busy and fully booked. We made all customers aware of this across our social media platforms.

Customers wishing to pre-book were advised to allow around 30 minutes extra lead time to avoid being late. We have also avoided overbooking journeys so we can continue providing realistic arrival times and a reliable service. We have covered all our pre bookings on time this morning and provided service roughly within 10-15 mins

This morning, however, our office staff have received abuse and foul language when honestly advising customers of waiting times of approximately 20–25 minutes. We don’t want to say coming now and turn up half hour late or don’t turn up. We don’t work like that.

We are doing our best to remain honest and transparent about delays so customers know what to expect. Despite the busy period, we are still operating and providing a service while many drivers are sacrificing time with their families during an important celebration.

We would like to make it clear that abuse towards our telephone operators or drivers will not be tolerated. Any customer who uses abusive or threatening behaviour towards staff or drivers will be permanently banned from using our service.

We will provide a service. Please give 20-30 mins time frame for a taxi today
