You might’ve seen bits about the new bin rules being rolled out. Instead of clicking through pages full of ads, here’s everything you actually need to know.
From 31 March 2026, new “Simpler Recycling” rules come into force across Manchester and England. These bring stricter waste separation. If bins aren’t sorted properly, they won’t be collected.
Here’s what you can’t put in each bin:
🚫 Recycling Bins (Blue / Paper Bags)
• Plastic film & bags: carrier bags, crisp packets, bubble wrap
• Most plastics: yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, fruit punnets, trays, plant pots
• Compostable/biodegradable plastics (including coffee pods)
• Glass items: drinking glasses, mirrors, Pyrex, vases, window glass
• Dirty paper/card: greasy pizza boxes, tissues, wet wipes, paper towels
• Other: polystyrene, metal hangers, laminated foil pouches
🚫 Food & Garden Waste Bin
• Any plastic (even compostable)
• Animal waste: bedding, faeces, cat litter
• Non-organic material: soil, rubble, stones
• Garden extras: plant pots, fencing, tools
🚫 General Waste (Black/Grey Bin)
• Dangerous items: batteries, lighters, vapes, electrics
• Hazardous waste: paint, chemicals, oils, liquids
• Building waste: bricks, cement, plasterboard
• Hot ashes or coals
🚫 Not Collected at All (Regular Bins)
• Anything too big/heavy for two people
• Kitchen units, worktops, flooring
• Sheds, decking, pallets
• Car parts, tyres, engines
⚠️ Key Changes
• Food and garden waste must now be separated
• Incorrect use could lead to fines up to £400
• Soft plastics must go to supermarket recycling points or general waste
If in doubt, take items like batteries, electrics, or rubble to your local tip.
