STOCKPORT’S BIN DRAMA— WHAT NEXT?

You really couldn’t make it up.

Stockport’s Liberal Democrat administration cut blue-bin collections from fortnightly to every four weeks to save money.

Then they introduced the £59 green-bin charge.

Then came Bin Gate — bins left unemptied because lids weren’t fully closed on safety grounds, with residents across Stockport dealing with overflowing rubbish and missed collections.

Now, after all that, they’ve announced blue bins are going back to fortnightly before Christmas.

But here’s the bigger issue.

Stockport is in the middle of a huge housebuilding programme. Thousands more apartments are planned, many relying on communal bins and many being built around the idea that residents won’t need cars.

More people means more rubbish. It really is that simple.

When communal bins are overflowing, where does the excess rubbish go? And how does somebody without a car take it to the tip?

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester recycling centres already use ANPR, cars are limited on visits and GMCA is looking at tighter residency checks to stop cross-border use.

To be absolutely clear, there is currently no announced charge for Stockport residents to use the tip.

But given the direction we’ve been travelling, it’s a perfectly reasonable question:

What next? More restrictions? A permit system? Another charge?

This Liberal Democrat administration seems obsessed with finding savings from the everyday services people actually notice, while pushing ahead with huge regeneration and development schemes.

Residents are paying record council tax bills.

They shouldn’t have to fight to get their bins emptied as well.

Not all waste companies can be trusted — even if they hold a waste carrier’s licence and have the correct insurance.

Having the paperwork in place doesn’t automatically mean a company will dispose of your waste responsibly.

This incident in Hertfordshire, where around 200 tonnes of suspected asbestos waste was dumped across several locations, shows just how serious illegal waste disposal can be — and the clean-up could cost taxpayers tens of thousands of pounds per trailer.

When choosing someone to remove your waste, don’t just look at whether they have a licence. Look at their reputation, reviews and, where possible, go through word of mouth and recommendations from people you trust.

Unfortunately, a waste licence alone doesn’t guarantee honesty or responsible disposal.

This is the new price list we’ve been given due to landfill sites reaching capacity. These are the charges I now have to pay to dispose of waste responsibly and legally.

So when you see someone offering to clear a huge pile of rubbish for £50, while everyone else is quoting £120 or more, it does make you wonder how they’re able to do it.

My disposal costs alone have increased by 40% overall, so unfortunately my prices have had to increase too. I’d much rather dispose of waste through the proper licensed facilities than see it dumped down an alleyway a few streets away under the cover of darkness. Responsible waste disposal isn’t cheap, but it’s the right way to do it.

Good evening everyone, I hope you’re all doing well.

Just a little update regarding my waste removal service.

Yesterday I took a load of waste to the commercial recycling centre and found out that disposal costs have increased significantly.

Previously, when I paid in cash, I wasn’t charged VAT. Unfortunately, that’s no longer an option. Due to landfill sites being at capacity, waste centres are either having to store waste or pay more to dispose of it themselves. As a result, cash payments have stopped, VAT is now added, and general waste disposal prices have also increased by around 20%.

Overall, this means my tipping costs have increased by around 40%.

To put that into perspective, a job that would have previously cost £50 will now be around £70. That’s not because I’m making any extra profit—it’s simply to cover the increased disposal costs while keeping the business running.

Because of this, I now have to introduce a minimum call-out charge of £20. With fuel costs, vehicle running costs and the increased tipping charges, it’s no longer possible for me to collect a single bin for £8–£15.

The good news is that my overheads are still relatively low because it’s just me. I don’t have staff wages to pay, which helps keep my prices as competitive as possible. My biggest expense is now tipping the waste, with insurance becoming my second-largest cost.

My biggest concern is that these rising costs will lead to even more fly-tipping. Those of you who have used me before know that everything I collect is disposed of responsibly and legally. I know there are cheaper options out there, and I completely understand that everyone is trying to save money. But cheaper isn’t always better, and if your waste is dumped illegally, it can end up coming back to you with a hefty fine.

I’m not one for filming every minute of my day for social media. Most of you already know what I do—I turn up, collect your rubbish, dispose of it properly, and then get on with the next job. In between, I enjoy doing all the other bits too: gardening, jet washing, putting TVs up, taking sheds down, and all the little jobs that make every day different.

I’ve never wanted to build a huge company. I genuinely enjoy working for myself, meeting people, having a chat, and helping out where I can.

And if you decide to use someone else because money is tight, I completely understand—there are absolutely no hard feelings. If you ever need me again, I’ll be here, as long as I’m still going.
