I don’t know how I feel about getting older.
Maybe it’s the realisation that time moves quicker than you ever expect. That the years you once thought were a lifetime somehow become memories before you’ve had chance to appreciate them.
But there are things I know for certain.
My passion for the open road.
The anticipation of crossing a border into a country I’ve never seen.
The uncertainty of a new route, a new challenge, and not quite knowing what’s waiting around the next corner.
The satisfaction of seeing a tender accepted after weeks, months, or even years of graft — followed immediately by the mad rush of trying to make everything happen.
The pressure.
The early mornings.
The long nights.
The miles that seem to disappear beneath you.
And then there’s something perhaps even more important.
Passing on what you’ve learnt.
Teaching the next generation that this industry is built on more than trucks, loads and invoices. It’s built on respect. Respect for the driver beside you. Respect for the haulier who has been doing it for 40 years. Respect for the one just starting out.
Because every one of us started somewhere.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I’m even more excited about how far there is still to go.
There will always be another road.
Another country.
Another challenge.
Another load that needs moving.
And as long as I’ve got the opportunity to keep chasing them, I’ll keep doing what I love.
Because getting older might be inevitable.
But losing the passion?
That’s something I’m not prepared to do.
