On Saturday we travelled a short distance to our arch rivals Achilles, with having a headache how to fit players in to certain positions due to lack of availability.
We actually started the game on top playing quick meaningful football and the game sparked into life when Taylor Bannister done his typical “out to in” run with the ball to then get a shot off from 25yards which went inches wide.
This somewhat spured Achilles on and after that they looked the team most likely to score. They came close to doing just that when smashing the cross bar from 30yards.
This seemed to rattle the Vale army and Achilles took the initiative sending a few crosses in to the box but failed to make the most of them. During this phase of Achilles pressure Luke Singh pulled off an outrageous save. The ball was sent in from a corner and not dealt with by the vale defence. The loose ball fell to an Achilles player whose goal bound strike looked destined for the bottom corner but Singhy got down with a strong wrist to turn it away.
Half way through the half Achilles broke down our right hand side and cut a lovely weighted pass back to James North to fire home into the top corner of the net from about 10yards.
We picked up our performance after this and Ben Garnham who had been our stand player started to dominate play in the midfield and was driving us forward.
HT 1-0
The half time conversation was very much that we could get something out of the game. A frank and honest conversation between the managers and players really seemed to have the right affect and we went out in a confident mood.
The 2nd half the Vale came out fighting with Ben garnham being very influential and looking the best player on the park by a country mile dictating the midfield and getting the ball at every opportunity.
This led the Achilles team to squeeze high on us and it took a straight ball to Taylor up top to slow his player up and do a very smart turn and burst of pace to storm through and have a pop at goal. The keeper made a smart saved before being clattered by his own player.
His saved had parried out to the feet of Baden Holmes who slotted home from a few yards. “ALL HE HAD TO DO” was tap it home, and this time he made no mistake.
This early goal really put the wind in our sails and the vale boys were on top and looked the likelier team to get the winner. 1-1
Our backline were immense 2nd half both defensively and getting the ball from Luke in goal at every opportunity. We were playing pure football.
This led to gaps in the Achilles defence and midfield and with 10minutes to go we sliced the defence open with the Achilles defender failing to get a foot on it to clear Taylor pounced with a stunning strike past the impressive Achilles keeper! 1-2
Taylor had been a threat all day but really stepped it up second half and ran the Achilles defence ragged.
We could have wrapped the game up and put it bed when Stozza nearly put the vale 3-1 in front. A mazy run and great strike from a tight angle with his weaker foot which beat the keeper but not the crossbar! The game ended 2-1 to vale leaving us the pride of IP2 😂.
