🟦 UNITE THE UNION SAY WRITE TO YOUR MP - Tell your MP to Fix Taxi & Private Hire Licensing: Protect Local Jobs. Protect Public Safety

Across England, taxi and private hire laws are broken. Out-of-area licensing lets drivers work anywhere in the country — even if they’re licensed hundreds of miles away.

THIS MEANS:
◾️Local councils cannot enforce the rules on the drivers working in their area.
◾️Local drivers who follow the rules lose work to out-of-area operators.
◾️Passengers face inconsistent safety standards depending on where the driver is licensed.
◾️Big Operators exploit loopholes while local workers and communities pay the price.
◾️At Gatwick Airport, Uber has a sponsorship deal despite being licensed by Transport for London, not Crawley Borough Council. Thousands of out-of-area drivers now work at Gatwick, pushing local drivers out. This is happening nationwide — Gatwick simply exposes the problem.

The independent Casey Report was clear: weak, inconsistent licensing creates real safeguarding risks and undermines public confidence. Yet Government has still not acted, leaving communities and local workers to suffer the consequences.

UNITE IS CAMPAIGNING FOR:
🔹One national set of safety and licensing standards
🔹A “Start or Finish” rule so every job begins or ends in the driver’s licensed area
🔹Stronger enforcement powers for councils
🔹Tougher penalties for repeated breaches
🔹Fine revenue kept locally to fund enforcement
🔹We need Parliament to act now. Will you write to your MP and demand they step in and stop this?

Most hackney carriage taxis also take pre booked jobs especially airport transfers ✈️
Can we also take this opportunity to kindly ask the residents of Horsham to refrain from parking on the Carfax rank (Stout House) between 19.00-07.00 as this is a working taxi rank between these hours, parking on there restricts us from working in the town if we can’t rank up on it, please be respectful.

🟧 AQEEL ARSHAD, DIRECTOR OF STREET CARS MANCHESTER RESPONDS TO ANDY BURNHAM'S CALL FOR LICENSING REFORM...

" I fully support Mayor Andy Burnham’s recent call for national reform on private hire vehicle licensing.

In a recent interview with the BBC, I spoke about a challenge that’s becoming harder to ignore — cross-border licensing. Drivers are increasingly getting licensed in one area but working in another. As I said then:
“Drivers go where it’s easiest, it’s perfectly legal, they don’t want to go through the extra testing in Manchester.”
“Licensing has become a bit of a free-for-all. Many choose to get licensed outside the region because it’s faster and cheaper.”

Manchester, like many other cities, has higher fees and stricter requirements for good reason — to maintain safety and high service standards. But with each council setting its own rules, we’re left with a patchwork system. The result? Inconsistencies that impact drivers, operators, and passengers across the board.

This goes beyond just regulation — it’s about sustainability. Right now, around 12,000 private hire drivers are working in Greater Manchester with licenses from councils outside the area. If all of these drivers were brought under a single, region-wide licensing system — similar to what Transport for London has in place — it could bring huge benefits. One estimate suggests Greater Manchester could generate an additional £3.6 million each year. That money could go straight back into the system: better enforcement, improved services, and stronger support for drivers across all boroughs.

We work closely with many councils and respect the work they do. But the current framework has created some unintended consequences. It’s no surprise that councils with lower fees and quicker processing times have attracted more applicants. The demand for faster, cheaper licensing has been building for years — this situation was always going to come to a head.

This isn’t about pointing fingers. It’s about finding a way forward together. Greater Manchester needs the ability to introduce region-wide licensing — not to take control, but to bring consistency, fairness, and a better experience for everyone involved. That means giving local leaders the tools to respond to local needs.

Right now, Mayor Burnham doesn’t have the power to make that change alone. It requires national legislation.

After the news that a school banned a child with autism from attending a field trip, I feel the need to write this. There are boys and girls that no one invites to birthdays for example. There are kids that want to be a part of a team, but don't get selected because it's more important to win than include those kids. Kids with special needs are not rare or weird, they just want what everyone wants: to be accepted!! 😡 Can I ask a question??
