Empty deck space costs exactly the same as full deck space.

Six pallets on a 44-tonne artic is twenty spaces you are paying for and not using. The vehicle does not care. The invoice does not care either.

Part load and groupage exist for that gap. Your pallets share a deck with other people's, and the saving is the space you did not book.

There is a trade. A shared deck is not a direct run, so transit is longer. If your delivery has a fixed hour on it, that is the wrong tool.

A full load buys you the timing. A part load buys you the space.

Twelve pallets of insulation and twelve pallets of tinned goods are the same footprint and a completely different job. Light freight fills the deck while the axles are barely troubled. Dense freight does the opposite, and the weight limit lands with the trailer half empty.
