Did you know that it’s National Forklift Safety Day (NFSD)? 🦺

The UKMHA’s annual initiative aims to minimise workplace accidents and injuries by raising awareness and providing effective training and resources.

This year, NFSD is all about highlighting technician safety.

Between 2019 and 2025, UK forklift suppliers lost an average of 1,000 working days per year to workplace injuries. More shocking is that 85% of incidents involved forklift technicians working on customers’ premises.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

To help create a safer future for MHE technicians, the UKMHA has refreshed its NFSD resources to include:

• Hands-on technician training for safer manual handling of forklifts
• Sharable bite-sized training videos covering essential safety practices
• Hazard perception challenges and safety maintenance checklists

It even launched the industry’s first dedicated MHE incident reporting portal with a view to better understand and mitigate everyday forklift hazards.

If you’ve had , , or other workplace transport training this year, had the course content changed?

In January, the Accrediting Bodies Association for Workplace Transport changed its categories. So if you’ve had training since then, you should check your certificate covers the machines you actually use.

Any training provider accredited through an ABA member ( , , , , or ) should be on top of this.

But if you have any concerns, please contact our technical team: 📧 [email protected]

Have you had workplace transport training since 19 January — or do you have a course coming up?

Please check your trainer has updated their course to match the new ABA Workplace Transport Groupings.

The machine category groupings changed on 19 January, affecting which courses should cover which truck.

If new certificates after January don’t match the new groupings, they might not be valid.

This applies to any training certified by members of the Accrediting Bodies Association — so , , , , or .

Ask your trainer for details or, if you’re still not sure, feel free to contact our technical team: 📧 [email protected]

If you’re hiring a forklift operator, it’s easy to check if their training credentials are genuine.

At least, it is if the course was accredited by AITT since 2014.

Check the certificate for the ACORNS logo and unique six-digit reference number — which we’ll use to check the certificate against 500,000 candidate records.

Just visit the AITT website, and click “ACORNS VERIFY”.

If you’re struggling to recruit forklift operators, it could be because your ads rule people out for no reason.

In the UK, we have five forklift training accrediting bodies under the ABA: AITT, ITSSAR, LANTRA, NPORS, and RTITB.

All work to the same code of practice, and meet the same testing benchmarks. But some recruitment ads specify just one or two bodies. If that’s you, you’re ruling out well-trained candidates for no real reason.

Instead, your ad could just say “Accredited training”.

That gives you a wider talent pool — without compromising standards or safety.

AITT is the industry’s only accrediting body run for our members, by our members.

No shareholders. No big profits. Just a group of training experts working together to deliver the best, most up-to-date training possible.

Our big decisions are made by an elected council — experts, truck manufacturers, H&S representatives, and trainers just like you.

So we’re always accountable, and always focused on quality, safety, and compliance.

Feel like being part of something different? You’ll find our membership options in the comments.

(And thanks, Allford of Steel City FLT Training, who commented these kind words on a recent LinkedIn post.)
