British Airways is stepping in with a “dream trip” for British train attack hero Stephen Crean after Ryanair refused to refund the flight he missed while recovering from stab wounds. The airline has offered the 61 year old Nottingham Forest fan two business class tickets from the UK to Porto, plus a two night stay at a five star hotel, so he can watch Forest play Sporting Braga in the Europa League on January 22. Nottingham Forest will provide his match tickets.

Crean was badly injured on November 1 when he confronted a knife attacker on an LNER train between Doncaster and London in Cambridgeshire, suffering multiple stab wounds to his hand, back, head and body as he tried to shield other passengers. Four days later he was meant to fly with Ryanair to Austria to see Forest play Sturm Graz, but he could not travel because of his injuries. When friends asked the airline for a refund, Ryanair cited its standard rule that fares are generally non refundable and suggested travel insurance instead, a stance Crean called “sad and childish.”

Since the attack, Forest fans and the wider public have raised more than sixty thousand pounds for Crean on JustGiving, and the club has invited him to travel with the team on a future trip. British Airways chief customer officer Calum Laming said Crean’s actions were heroic and that the offer is a small way to thank him for putting the safety of others first. The contrasting responses from the two airlines have sparked a new debate over how carriers handle exceptional cases and how much room there is for compassion in strict refund policies.
