This weekend was a little different from our usual working weekends!

We put the orange overalls and spanners down and swapped the tools for b**r taps as we headed behind the bars to help out at the Annual B**r and Music Festival at the Railway!

The gang took on a variety of jobs throughout the weekend, from looking after the b**r cellar, to running the ever popular c***r bar at Oxenhope!

Meanwhile, members of our S&T team were busy running the Ingrow site and helping to make sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes.

It’s been a busy but brilliant weekend for the gang, and it’s been great to be part of such a fantastic event! A big thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.

Haven’t been before? We’d definitely recommend it!

Over the weekend, The gang were out and about on the railway, carrying out fishplate greasing in the Damems area on Saturday before moving on to the Ingrow area on Sunday.

On Saturday the Works Train also carrying out shunting duties on the railway, so while the train was locked in at Oakworth, some of the crew took the opportunity to clean out the drains around Oakworth Crossing.

This is a job we carry out every couple of months to keep the drains clear and free flowing. The drains are particularly important as they deal with rainfall and surface water running down Station Road, which historically has caused flooding of the track bed and led to a whole range of issues

One of the jobs that often goes unseen by the public is testing and maintaining the railway’s pointwork.

Today, a small gang travelled out on the Class 101 DMU to carry out Facing Point Lock (FPL) testing, This involves taking measurements at each set of Points before checking that everything is operating correctly, and making any necessary adjustments.

Tuesday Throwback

We throw the years back 51 years to 1975, when the Civil gang carried out a track renewal in the very same cutting where we were working last week.

The big difference? Back in 1975, the focus was on renewing the track, while last week we were installing new drainage channels to help improve the flow of water through the hillside.

It wouldn’t be a Civil Week without a bit of rain to keep everyone cool!

After a week of mixed weather, we’ve had a successful start to the drainage project. The work will continue as time permits over the winter months, but for this week, the work has come to a stop.

A massive thank you goes out to all the volunteers who have taken time off work this week to get stuck into the project, as well as the local contractors who have helped us get the project off to such a great start.

It’s safe to say it’s now time to retire to the The Royal Oak for a well earned pint and sausage roll.

This week we’ve been carrying out a mini Civil Week, with our main Civil Week now in April.

The focus of this week’s work has been getting started on a drainage project to improve the cutting slope at Brighton Cutting which is just below Oakworth.

We’re pleased to say the work is going well, and over the winter months we’ll be continuing to work on this project with the aim of getting it completed.

Now we’ve all dried off after the rain yesterday, this is what we got up to over the weekend.

Saturday saw us doing a number of little jobs ready for the upcoming Mini Civil Week. We strimmed the grass back in the cess and around the area of the new channel before starting to install the plant crossing, which will be used by the digger to cross the track when required.

We also assisted the Works Train in rearranging the wagons in Oakworth Yard and sorted out the drainage pipe we had in storage in the yard ready for installation.

Sunday saw us brave the rain and wind and carry out some ballast bashing in the Haworth area, continuing to tidy up the section of mainline which runs past Haworth MPD.

Last night saw the first of many loads of materials being put in place ready for our Mini Civil Week, which starts a week on Monday.

This year’s job is to improve the drainage around the Oakworth area. Last night, we headed out and started placing bags of pea gravel along the cess in preparation for the work.

In total, 35-tonne bags of pea gravel will be used as part of this drainage project.
