Here we see a very unusual vehicle resting between duties on the Hants & Dorset 47 route between Southampton and Wi******er (antecedent of the present Bluestar 1). AEC Regent V 975 CWL, carrying a 65 seat Park Royal highbridge body, had been new to City of Oxford Motor Services in 1958.

It passed to the Gosport & Fareham Omnibus Company (Provincial) which was by then under Hants & Dorset management, in 1970. Withdrawn at Provincial early in 1975, it was pressed into service with Hants & Dorset at Southampton depot for a few weeks during March/April 1975 to help alleviate the severe shortage of buses the Company was experiencing at that time owing to delays in the delivery of new vehicles.

Shortage of available double deck buses had resulted in Bristol LH6L XEL 829K, which had been new to Hants & Dorset in late 1971, being allocated to service 4 on the day this photograph was taken in March 1977.

The 4 ran between Poole and Bournemouth by the same route as the present m2, and in 1977 was normally operated by traditional half-cab double deck buses with a crew of driver and conductor. In this instance the scheduled two person crew would have been used on the 43 seat saloon, which is seen at Branksome while returning from Bournemouth to Poole.

Following XEL 829K we see Bristol VR NRU 311M in the Queen's Silver Jubilee livery it carried during 1977; this was on service 2 via Bournemouth Road to Poole, a route that had been fully converted to driver only operation in the mid 1970s.
