A once in a lifetime sighting, that is tinged with a bit of concern!
Our 1250 departure from Fowey, were incredibly lucky to see this whale! At first, we didnt have a CLUE what we were seeing, but with some help of Marine Strandings Network Mick Dawton and Sonia, its been identified as possibly, a Sowerby's Beaked Whale!
It is rare to see these whales, as they are reclusive and live in deep waters, hence the concern at one being so extremely close to shore.
We reported the sighting to BDMLR South West England and agreed that this should be shared with a reminder of the safe and lawful watching practice:
Try and maintain 100m distance ✔️
Do not chace, cut off, or circle the animals ✔️
Idle or neutral ✔️
Hopefully we will not see this one again and it can safely go on its it way, but should you have any concern, Marine Strandings have a hotline ☎️ 03452012626 for dead strandings, and BDMLR rescue hotline ☎️ 01825765546
I've spared you the excitement, confusion and arguing that went on between us crew 😆 so the video is muted.
