🗣️"The new design of the junctions will create much-needed additional capacity, better connectivity and safer journeys for the thousands of drivers using this key route each day."

Those are the words of National Highways project manager Adam Gallis, who is in charge of the ten-year programme to improve junctions along the A52 in Nottingham.

A busy stretch of the road will be partially closed to allow for "pivotal" works that are hoped to reduce journey times.

National Highways is working to improve the capacity of the Wheatcroft and Nottingham Knight roundabouts - the final stage of a ten-year programme to improve junctions along the A52 in Nottingham.

The layout of the junctions at the two roundabouts will be enlarged, with a cut-through to be installed in the middle of the islands connecting the A52.

This will allow drivers to travel straight through the junctions instead of going around the roundabouts, which officials believe will reduce congestion.

From Monday, September 7, work will start at the Wheatcroft roundabout and carry on for three months, with overnight closures in place from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday.

Meanwhile, from 8am on Monday, September 21, to 6pm on Friday, September 25, the section of Flawforth Lane where it meets the A52 will be fully closed.

Overnight closures will also be in place over one weekend from Friday, September 25, until Monday, September 28, with part of the A52 Gamston Link Road closed from 8pm to 6am during this period.

Utility companies will also begin their work at the Nottingham Knight island in November, lasting for four months.

National Highways says that, during this time, there will be lane closures along the A52 and a reduced speed limit of 40mph to ensure everyone remains safe.

The agency's project manager, Adam Gallis, said: "Work we have already completed on the A52 through Nottinghamshire has had a positive impact on reducing congestion and keeping everyone moving through the county.

"We’re now ready to start the final phase of the project to upgrade the remaining two roundabouts, which will further improve commuter journeys and remove the bottleneck at these junctions.

"The new design of the junctions will create much-needed additional capacity, better connectivity and safer journeys for the thousands of drivers using this key route each day."

The works are part of the A52 Nottingham Junctions scheme, which has been under way since 2021 and resulted in improvements to similar junctions at Bingham, Gamston, Silverdale and Stragglethorpe.

Other work will include installing new signals and installing crossings to allow for better pedestrian routes.

The MP for Rushcliffe, James Naish, added: "These works on the A52 have been talked about for many years and will unlock critical capacity once completed, so I am pleased they are moving forwards.

"The scheme committed to by the Government represents a significant investment into Rushcliffe and, once completed, will benefit everybody moving between the east and west of our constituency."
