So that’s the first year trading completed.

Been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I am enjoying my new career path and on the plus side, since starting trading, I’m the right colour in the P&L.

Some highs and lows as expected, some very expensive mistakes, but if don’t make mistakes how can you learn. A change in business plan and what I’m focusing on hauling. Driving through the alps was nice, but got to pay the bills and sadly in transport, it’s just not possible to compete with European Hauliers and their rates - I genuinely have no idea how they make any money.

On an aside, not really being political, but why is the UK government still allowing European companies to cabotage in the UK. We can’t do it in Europe - so much for Brexit - take back our own power - yeh right! Europe one, United Kingdom nil!

Anyway, Politics aside, here’s to the next year. Where to go and how to develop? Part of me is saying expand, but that means taking on staff. The biggest lesson I have learned this year is that it is so different being self employed to working for someone else. Your attitude is different and what drives you is different. You have to be really lucky to find an employee in a small business that is going to share your passion and the ups and downs and go that extra mile, while not owning the company.

Something to ponder on those 4 hour journeys.

Self employed means no long Bank Holiday weekend for me!!

So to survive in business, it’s always necessary to be prepared to change direction as situations change. I’m back to hauling containers around the UK.

The ridiculous rise in fuel prices over the past year, driven by those racketeer Oil Companies, the trips to Italy have become completely unviable nor sustainable, at least for the moment, so they have had to be put on hold. You can bet your bottom dollar that the fuel price won’t drop as quickly as it shot up.

On the plus side, this type of driving is much more challenging and enjoyable. Lovely as driving through the Alps is, when you can maintain an average speed of 50mph over a 2200 mile journey in an artic, there isn’t much in the way of manoeuvring, rather a case of get up, put foot down for 9 hours then lift off. Says a great deal about the difference between UK and French / Italian Motorways.

Beautiful morning in Central France after another trip through the Alps.

Load 2 all loaded up now - gonna need a bigger tunnel as they aren’t getting through Mont Blanc - looks like the trip is going further south to the Ferjus Tunnel that can higher vehicles.

So todays cargo is 2 RollerTeam Zefiro Sports Editions - perfect for the outdoor types with a huge garage / workshop area under the bunk for Moutain bikes, Trials Bikes, Canoes, you name it. Wasted on me, I’ll just stick to bringing them to the UK😄😄

On the way back now after the first trip - beautiful weather in the Alps.

Todays mission accomplished - been a few years since I drove over the M62 and the highest point of any Motorway in England as well as passing ‘The Little House on the Prairie’

Pick up Motorhome number one from one of the most helpful people I have dealt with since starting driving and then number two from possibly the most unhelpful company I’ve encountered - for awkwardness, they were up their with a supermarket distribution centre.

Night in the delights of Trowell Services. Tomorrow, back to the tropical South.

Nice 700 mile round trip lined up for this week. First stop Accrington to pick up Motorhome number one before heading accross the Pennines to Sheffield to pick up number two, a brand new ‘Icon’ Motorhome, designed by and exclusively built for Solent Motorhomes, to be delivered to their Showroom in Poole.

Looking at hours, I reckon there’s a good chance I’ll make it back to my Chesterfield roots before having to stop for the night.
