WHAT’S UNSEEN BEHIND THE SCENES!

One thing I think people are starting to realise about my “Park It, or Pass It” feature on HGV1 Radio is this:

I don’t publicly highlight poor standards just for the sake of it.

Behind the scenes, I’m also contacting operators, services, truckstops and decision-makers directly to challenge the issues drivers are raising… and wherever possible, encourage improvements.

Because this has never been about “having a go.”

It’s about trying to make things better.

If drivers are paying to park, shower, eat and rest, then basic standards matter.

And when drivers repeatedly raise concerns about:

🚿 Filthy showers
🚽 Dirty toilets
🕳️ Pothole-riddled parking areas
💡 Poor lighting
🍔 Lack of healthy food choices
🔒 Security worries
🥶 Lack of basic comfort

…then somebody needs to say something.

But equally, when companies listen, respond and invest, they deserve credit too.

I’ll always cheerlead improvements just as loudly as I challenge problems 👍

That’s why I do what I do with My Truck Stop and HGV1 Radio.

Not to embarrass people.

Not to create drama.

But because drivers need to be heard.

And sometimes, a difficult conversation today can lead to a better truckstop tomorrow.

🚛🏆 FINAL DAYS TO NOMINATE… AND THIS ONE REALLY MATTERS 🏆🚛

Right then drivers…

If you spend half your life bouncing around Britain’s roads surviving on motorway coffee, questionable showers and parking spaces tighter than a taxman’s wallet… this is your moment 😅

Nominations for Logistics UK’s “Best Truck Stop of the Year 2026” close on 31st May.

And honestly?
This isn’t just about trophies and shiny LinkedIn graphics.

This is about recognising the places actually trying.

The truckstops:
🚿 keeping showers clean
🍔 serving decent food
💡 improving lighting and security
🚛 giving drivers somewhere safe to stop
👏 and treating people with a bit of respect

Because let’s be honest… drivers should be quick to shout when somewhere is dreadful (and you KNOW I don’t mind helping with that part 😏)

But if a site is getting it right?

They deserve backing too.

As one of the judges this year, I can honestly say the feedback drivers are giving is hugely important.

🚛 Good operators SHOULD be recognised
🚛 Poor standards SHOULD be challenged
🚛 And drivers SHOULD have a voice in both 👍

So if there’s a truckstop you genuinely rate…
Nominate them.

And if there’s one that’s improved lately because drivers kept speaking up?

Even better.

Because when drivers speak up…
People DO start listening 🚛💥

IT’S A GAME OF TWO HALVES… AND I’M NOT TALKING FOOTBALL! ⚽🚛

Ahead of everyone asking whether “it’s coming home again” this summer… yes, I AM talking football analogies!

And today, I’m applying the sporting cliché to Newark Lorry Park.

Stick with me… I’ll explain.

Let’s kick off with the positives from a recent My Truck Stop review 👇

🚿 The toilets and showers were described as decent
🔒 The parking felt safe and secure

And honestly… that’s good to hear.

But now it’s half-time ⏱️

Let’s change ends 🥅⚽️

Need something to eat?
Well, if the café is closed, it’s a walk into town… not exactly ideal after a 15-hour shift.

And then came the bit that earned Newark a straight red card 🟥 from me.

Here’s what my reviewer had to say:

“Both truck and driver definitely come away dirtier than when they went in.
It’s pretty much a building site.

It’s cheap, but bring your wellies, and expect your truck to be minging when you leave.”

Ouch.

And unfortunately, the poor condition of the parking surface isn’t a one-off complaint either.

Across Google and other review platforms, the same words keep appearing:

💨 Dusty
🌧️ Muddy
🛞 Dirty

Newark Lorry Park is currently rated 3.5⭐ on MyTruckStop.

And while they’re clearly doing a lot right… I still gave them a “Pass It” on my HGV1 Radio feature because of the parking area conditions.

Because drivers shouldn’t have to tolerate substandard surroundings simply because they’re used to them.

Who wants to clean themselves up after a long day behind the wheel… only to trudge straight back through mud, dust and dirt?

I’m pretty sure the England squad wouldn’t accept facilities that leave them looking like they’ve just completed a soggy Glastonbury.

Drivers need to be match fit to do their jobs properly.

So let’s stop the home goals… and start raising standards.

A YEAR OLD AND STILL BLOOMING! 🌸🚛

If your travels take you along the Great North Road in Cambridgeshire and you need somewhere to stop…

📍 Moto Sawtry

Small, but perfectly formed… and at just over a year old, it’s still shiny and new.

Rated 5⭐ on the My Truck Stop platform, you won’t be surprised that I gave it a definite “Park It” on Saturday’s HGV1 Radio feature with Simon Williams 🚛👍

And when people say, “It’s the little things that matter”…

At Moto Sawtry, it’s the vase of fresh flowers sitting beside every bathroom basin 🌸

Because sometimes it’s not grand gestures drivers remember.

It’s the places that make you feel like somebody actually gives a damn about the people using them.

And in an industry where drivers can often feel forgotten… that matters more than people realise.

TUNE IN… TRUCK OUT… AND THANK YOU 🚛📻

I’m thoroughly enjoying being invited onto HGV1 Radio every fortnight to join Simon Williams for our “Park It, or Pass It” feature 👍

What started as a conversation alongside the awesome Ruth Tuffnell during HGV1’s International Women’s Day coverage, grew into an invitation from Simon to join him regularly to chat all things truckstops, driver facilities, and life on the road.

And now we:
👍 “Park It, or Pass It”
😂 have a few laughs
🤬 share the occasional rant
😱 hear some truly shocking driver stories
…but most importantly, there’s a growing feeling that drivers are finally being heard.

So I just wanted to thank Simon and Mikey Faulkner for welcoming me to the station and giving My Truck Stop a platform to amplify REAL driver experiences.

Because this isn’t just radio filler.

The conversations we’re having are shining a light on:
🚿 poor facilities
🕳️ potholes
🔐 security concerns
🍔 menu choice
👏 sites actually getting things right
…and the everyday reality of life parked up in Britain.

Drivers are talking.
People ARE listening.
And long may that continue.

Appreciate you both 😊👍

THERE’S DEFINITELY NO RADIO SILENCE WHEN…

I join Simon Williams on HGV1 Radio at lunchtime today 🚛📻

It’s our third “Park It, or Pass It” feature, and as usual there’s plenty of truckstop tales to tell!

The good, the bad… and the downright 😱🤬

From decent grub and clean facilities, to potholes, parking problems and places drivers say need sorting… nothing’s off limits.

Drivers are talking.
Those that need to ARE starting to listen.
(And if not, I’ll keep going until they do!) 😉

Catch us soon after 12 noon on HGV1 Radio 👍

🚛 “WE’VE LISTENED TO DRIVER FEEDBACK…”

Now THAT’S a sentence drivers like hearing.

Certas Energy have announced a £500,000 investment into Watling Street Truckstop… with plans focused on what drivers actually need:

⚠️ Better security
🍔 Improved food & facilities
⛽ HVO, AdBlue® & diesel
💳 Fuel card & FuelTapp payments
🔋 Future E-HGV & EV charging

After years of complaints about filthy showers, poor food, unsafe parking and paying a fortune to stop somewhere grim… it’s good to see driver feedback helping shape real investment.

But the real verdict won’t come from announcements.

It’ll come from the drivers pulling in and thinking:

“Actually… this place is alright.” 😉

And that’s where My Truck Stop comes in.

Because the reviews will reveal whether this is:
👍 A genuine upgrade
…or just lipstick on a lay-by 🚛🧡

TUNES AND TRUCKSTOP TRUTHS! 📻

I’m back on HGV1 Radio this Saturday with Simon Williams for another round of “Park It, or Pass It!”

And somehow… we’re already on feature number THREE 😳

We’ll be chatting:
👍 The good
👎 The bad
😱 And the downright shocking

All driven by REAL feedback from drivers using My Truck Stop 📱

🔸More drivers are joining.
🔸More reviews are being shared.
🔸More roadside facilities are being talked about honestly and openly.

Because what happens when a driver stops matters just as much as what happens on the road.

So if you’ve got the HGV1 Radio app… tune in Saturday 🎧

And if you still haven’t reviewed your latest stop…

Review. Rate. Repeat. 🚛

“PARK IT, OR PASS IT” IS GAINING PACE!

As I head towards my third guest feature on HGV1 Radio where I get to chat all things truckstops with Simon Williams, it’s evident that drivers are appreciating that sharing their experiences of life on the road is being heard and acted upon.

The naming… and shaming, if deserved, and where sites need to be held to account.

Over the weekend I was contacted by a driver who had made a stop just a couple of days earlier at Rivington Services Northbound… and what started positively soon turned into a tale of two halves.

Let’s start with the good:

“For the shop and eateries in the services, it’s good with plenty of choice.”

Then the mood changes…

“The cleanliness of the toilets, and especially the showers, is diabolical.
The showers were filthy and stank. They obviously hadn’t been cleaned in days… if not weeks.”

And the images shared with me certainly reinforced their words.

But there’s more.

My driver approached a nearby member of staff to report that the showers needed attention… the staff member simply shrugged and walked away.

If you’re a business that provides services…

Provide. The. Services.

A filthy, stinking bathroom facility is not a service… it’s a shocker.

And this isn’t just a bad day for Rivington Services.
TripAdvisor and Google reviews certainly echoed my driver’s experience.

And THAT is exactly why drivers need platforms like My Truck Stop and features like “Park It, or Pass It.”

Because if nobody speaks up… nothing changes.

Drivers aren’t expecting five-star luxury.
They’re asking for the basics:

🚿 Clean showers
🚽 Toilets that don’t turn your stomach
👂 Staff who actually listen when issues are reported

And when multiple reviews point towards the same problems, it stops being “one unhappy customer” and starts becoming a pattern.

So fair play to the drivers who continue taking the time to share the good, the bad, and the downright grim.

Because every honest review helps drivers decide whether a place is worth parking at… or worth passing by. 👍👎

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT WATLING? 🍳☕🍰

It always makes me smile when I see a message from Mike Heaton pop up… and as ever, his latest update doesn’t disappoint!

Certas Energy have now taken over management at Watling Street, and the cafe is open daily serving hot and cold food and drinks.

🕕 Opening hours:

Monday - Friday
0600 - 2000

Weekends
0600 - 1300

And now Mike wants to hear from the people who matter most… the drivers 🚛

He’s encouraging drivers to jump onto My Truck Stop to rate, review, and report on their cafe experience… and hopefully repeat their visit too!

The team are keen to know what drivers think of the new menu, and if demand is there, opening hours could even be extended.

So tell them…

🍳 What do you love on a truckstop menu?
🤢 What puts you right off?
👀 And what would you want to see more of?

Because your feedback shapes what happens next.

So calling all drivers…

TELL US ABOUT WATLING 📣

DRIVERS CAN FEEL A TYRE PROBLEM BEFORE MOST PEOPLE CAN SEE ONE 🛞

One thing I never ‘tire’ of is connecting with good people on social media.

Recently I’ve been chatting with Adam James from The Tyre Network… and it’s opened my eyes even more to how much badly surfaced parking areas, potholes, and rough sites can impact tyres and vehicles.

Because drivers notice things most people don’t.

🛞 Vibrations
🛞 Steering changes
🛞 Strange noises
🛞 Pulling left or right

That isn’t luck.
That’s experience.

And it’s why I hate hearing drivers say:
“I’m just a driver.”

No you’re not.

You’re skilled professionals keeping the country moving 🚛

Big thanks to Adam for supporting My Truck Stop and giving us a shoutout across his network 👍

If fleet tyre support matters to your business, go and check out what The Tyre Network are doing.
