I travel our motorway system nearly every day on my way to see customers a I see tailgating cars right the back to cars ,cars to HGV and HGV to HGV'S especially when the weather conditions are poor. This poster makes a great back drop for a driver toolbox talk as a serious reminder to all road users.

Although I attended this one day course earlier this year and have sent my own operators to attend . I do highly recommend all operators and brake test technicians should attend be it online or in person as we have found there is still confusion when a test report shows passed when in fact it should read FAIL.

You need a transport manager to get your operator's license and without that, you can't run trucks and transport managers don't come cheap. But what exactly...

Road Transport Expo – Warwickshire

We recently made a whistle-stop visit to the Road Transport Expo Wednesday, with a sharp focus on the latest developments in:

Simulated brake testing

Wheel safety & electronic braking

Compliance solutions

Training for operators and drivers

It was great to see innovation in action and hear discussions like “Why duct tape isn’t a compliance strategy” in the Knowledge Zone—a reminder of how essential real standards are in transport safety.

Plenty of networking, meaningful conversations, and yes—our fair share of business cards and branded pens (they do take refills 😉).

Buying a First Car: Lessons from the MOT History

Earlier this month, my partners son passed his driving test — first time!

Proud moment — as you can see from the smile!

Next step: finding him his first car. We came across a tidy 2014 Ford Fiesta — clean, high mileage, two previous owners. Looked good in the photos and seemed fairly priced.

I ran a vehicle check using Motorscan.co.uk — £9.99 well spent.

✅ Not stolen

✅ Not scrapped

✅ DVLA clear

✅ No write-off history

But then came the MOT history…

⚠️ The same advisories — worn tires, brake pad limits — were flagged for multiple years. Nothing had been done. If it's ignored once, it’s a warning. If it’s ignored for years, it’s a red flag.

It’s surprising that MOT testers don’t always follow up on previous advisories, especially when the data is publicly stored via DVSA.

A recent RAC report said 1 in 6 drivers ignore MOT advisories — and many go on to break down or crash. This Fiesta could easily have added to that stat.

We walked away from the deal — and potentially from a future headache.

Motorscan.CO.UK ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — I’d highly recommend their service.

Lesson learned: Always read beyond the “MOT: Pass” and check the history. That’s where the truth often lives.

Walk round trailer checks are very important..

A shocking incident near the M25 has landed a Waltham Abbey operator with a one-month licence suspension.

A refrigerated trailer detached from a lorry on Honey Lane, blocking the road. The driver – also the company’s director – admitted he didn’t properly check the trailer was secure.

🚛 Trailer slid off and blocked a busy route
⚠️ Driver fined and given 8 penalty points
🔧 DVSA found major maintenance and compliance issues
⏳ The company now has a short window to find a new transport manager or risk losing its licence entirely

A serious reminder of the importance of road safety and proper vehicle checks.

A interesting development is being reported by the RHA and it sounds like the logistics and transportation industry is in for some significant changes. If operators are being faced with stricter checks and requirements, like ensuring goods are loaded and secured in a way that’s similar to airline containers, it will certainly increase the complexity of cross-border road haulage, especially for companies that have been relying on more traditional methods like palletized loads.

The new rules could be a response to growing concerns around safety, security, or even environmental considerations. It might also be part of efforts to streamline customs or facilitate better tracking of goods as they move through Europe.

How do you think this will impact the industry in terms of cost, efficiency, or even the types of vehicles that are used? Will it force a shift towards more specialized vehicles or technology?

Investing in Excellence!
This week, I had the opportunity to attend an insightful session on HGV Roller Brake Testing, presented by industry expert David Cooper, hosted by the Institute of Transport Administration (IoTA) in Bedford, England.
One of the real highlights was taking part in a live roller brake test demonstration — seeing the process in action added real-world depth to the learning experience.
It was also great to connect with a professional group of participants, including a former DVSA inspector, a scaffold operator with his transport consultant, and a newly qualified transport manager attending with their client.
David Cooper shared invaluable knowledge and practical insights, making the technical aspects of brake testing accessible and directly applicable to everyday transport operations.
A big thank you to David and IoTA for organising such a high-quality, hands-on event. Professional development like this keeps us moving forward — raising standards of safety, compliance, and operational excellence across the industry.
If you're serious about staying ahead in transport, investing in expert-led training is the way forward!

⚠️ Important Update for HGV Operators: Brake Testing Standards Have Changed

New guidance around Roller Brake Testing (RBT) for HGVs has revealed serious concerns across the industry. Many operators are being misinformed by garages and dealerships, receiving PASS results that are technically non-compliant.

This means your PMI (Preventative Maintenance Inspection) may be marked as roadworthy when it’s not—putting your fleet, your O-license, and your reputation at risk.

✅ We can review your brake test reports and PMI records to ensure full compliance before issues are picked up in an audit or Public Inquiry.
