That's right, EVERY SINGLE available vehicle that WCT owns is out on the road today. Whether it's picking up and dropping off patients for ambulance transport, or taking members to Dalton Park on a Trip Club outing, or driving students at a nearby school for a day out, or taking a member to their doctor's appointment, we have EVERY SINGLE vehicle out on the road.

If memory serves us correctly, this hasn't happened since before COVID.

The Hub is getting busier and busier, and we're proud to be able to help the residents of Weardale get out and about.

We're here to help with appointments, minibus bookings for local groups, and, of course, our popular Trip Club outings.

Our members recently enjoyed a lovely day out at Wynyard Gardens. The trip began with a delicious lunch, followed by a relaxing stroll through the beautiful, peaceful gardens. It was the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy some fresh air!

🌟 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT #7 🌟

Last but definitely not least... meet Roger!

I’m a Volunteer Driver, and I’ve been volunteering with the Hub for around five years.

I moved to the area from North Yorkshire, where I was already volunteering as a driver with the Little White Bus in Wensleydale. When I discovered the Hub, I thought it would be a similar experience. I wanted to make good use of my spare time in retirement and be a helpful part of the community.

What I enjoy most is meeting people from across the local area and being part of something that’s both useful and well-respected.

While I don’t have one specific favourite memory, I really value the atmosphere at the Hub. There’s a strong sense that everyone is there for the benefit of others, and it’s rewarding to see the positive impact we have week after week.

For me, volunteering brings a real sense of purpose. I’m often reminded by our passengers just how important the Hub is to the local community, which makes it all the more worthwhile.

Fun fact: I play bass guitar in two music groups — one plays classic 70s rock, and the other is a jazz band!

🌟 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT #6 🌟

Meet Colin!

I’m both a Passenger Assistant and a car driver. I support both the driver and our members on trips. I help people get to and from their homes, on and off the vehicle, carry shopping, and generally make sure everyone is comfortable and supported.

Sometimes I also collect people from further up the Dale in the Hub car to help make things run more smoothly. Plus there’s a bit of paperwork along the way too!

I’ve been volunteering for a few months now. I’d really enjoyed the trips as a member and, being reasonably fit, I thought I’d offer to help out.

What do I enjoy most? It’s hard to pick just one thing. I enjoy the whole experience of helping the Hub and supporting people on the trips. And of course, I enjoy going on the trips too!

One moment that stands out is when someone joined us who hadn’t been on a trip since before COVID. They had a wonderful time, which was really lovely to see.

Volunteering helps take you out of yourself. You visit places you might not otherwise go and try new things (I’d never driven an electric car before!).

It also makes a real difference to others, helping people get out and about, build confidence, and enjoy what often feels like a day out with friends.

Fun fact: I have a bronze certificate in adult ballet!

🌟 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT #5 🌟

Meet Steve!

I’m a Volunteer Driver, making sure our passengers travel safely and arrive at their destinations on time.

I’ve been volunteering for just over a year. I was looking for something to do after my wife passed away, ideally somewhere I could be helpful and give something back to others.

What I enjoy most is meeting lots of different people and getting the chance to visit new places.

One trip that really stands out was visiting Minsteracres. I’d passed it countless times without ever realising it was there. It turned out to be such a peaceful and relaxing place.

It’s always rewarding to see people happy to get out and about, and to help put them at ease, especially when they’re travelling to hospital appointments.

Fun fact: I love photography! I’ve done weddings and portraits, entered competitions, and even had my photos featured on TV and in newspapers.

🌟 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT #4 🌟

Meet Gillian.

I’m a Passenger Assistant for Trip Club, helping our members get on and off the bus safely and making sure they’re comfortable throughout the journey. Whether it’s carrying shopping or simply offering some company, I’m always happy to help.

I’ve been volunteering since 2013, after leaving my job and wanting to find a way to give back to the community, and this role was the perfect fit.

What I love most is seeing the joy Trip Club brings to our members and how it helps them stay independent. It’s also been lovely getting to know people and building real friendships along the way.

There have been so many great trips, but one that stands out is a visit to South Shields for fish and chips, followed by time on the beach. Everyone was so happy and relaxed. It was such a special memory.

No amount of money could match the feeling of helping others and making a positive difference in their lives. I feel very fortunate to be able to do this. It’s far better than being in an office five days a week!

Fun fact: I love doing karaoke with my sister!

🌟 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT #3 🌟

Meet Kathryn, who volunteers in The Hub with office-based work.

I help out at reception, answering the phones, doing paperwork and filing, supporting Trip Club, and generally helping with anything that’s needed. I also welcome people into The Hub, help with photocopying, and signpost people to other services if needed. I’m always happy to learn and lend a hand wherever I can!

I’ve been volunteering for over 2 years now. I originally started to get out of the house, help others, and give myself a sense of purpose. It’s been great for my wellbeing and has really helped me feel less socially isolated.

What do I enjoy most? Honestly… everything about it!

I especially love chatting with our members and going on trips with them. It’s wonderful to hear their feedback and see the difference these outings make. It’s a real lifeline for many people. And in many ways, it’s a lifeline for me too.

Fun fact: People say I’m always happy!

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight #2 🌟

David R - Volunteer Minibus and Car Driver

I’ve been volunteering with WCT since 2024, driving both the electric cars and minibuses. Over the years, I’ve helped with group outings to a wide range of venues, as well as patient transport journeys, taking people to appointments and collecting patients being discharged from hospital.

After retiring, I suddenly had much more free time and wanted to give something back to the community. Volunteering has always been important to me, and in the past I’ve also helped with the running of Wolsingham Pool when it was threatened with closure, as well as volunteering with engineering design for Weardale Railway before it reopened in 2004.

What I enjoy most about volunteering with WCT is the interaction with passengers and seeing the enjoyment they get from the trips.

For many people, especially those with limited mobility, these outings are a vital opportunity to meet friends, socialise and visit places that might otherwise be difficult to reach.

One of my favourite memories is enjoying tea, cakes, and a chat with passengers at the Quarry Café in Hunwick. I ate too many cakes!

And a fun fact? I’ve appeared as a supporting actor in two TV dramas - ITV’s Beowulf in 2016 and This England on Sky Atlantic in 2022!
