Airport Rip Off....
Another!
Dear Secretary of State,
Re: Increase in East Midlands Airport Drop-Off Charges
I am writing to express my concern about the increase in drop-off charges at East Midlands Airport. The fee for using the Rapid Drop Off area is rising from £5 for 15 minutes to £8 for 10 minutes.
I understand the airport has explained that this increase reflects wider inflationary pressures and requirements for ongoing investment in the airport, and brings the charges in line with other airports across the country, however the scale of the change seems disproportionate for the passengers and local families who rely on their cars to access the airport.
While the airport has pointed passengers to a free alternative in a long-stay car park, which is a ten minutes’ walk away from the airport, this may not be a suitable alternative for those with elderly family members, young children, heavy luggage or people travelling with temporary mobility issues. The higher charge at the drop-off point becomes unavoidable for people who need to make use of the convenient proximity to the airport.
Investment in airport infrastructure is important for connectivity and economic growth, but many will feel that it is unfair that these costs are being put on those simply dropping off family and friends at the terminal. *These outrageous fees are not just an issue at East Midlands Airport, but are now affecting airports and passengers across the UK.*
I would be grateful if you could outline your position on increased airport charges and what steps you are taking to engage with airports over their fees to ensure they remain proportionate and fair. I would also appreciate if you could outline what steps you are taking to invest in airport infrastructure to prevent costs being absorbed disproportionately by passengers.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Lee Anderson MP
