From National Highways: Funding applications open for lorry park improvements.

Lorry parking operators are being urged to apply for funding to help improve facilities after a multi-million-pound fund announced an extension for applications today (28 May 2026).

Launched in 2023, extra funding has been made available through the Lorry Park Improvement Scheme to increase capacity, improve security and improve welfare facilities such as toilets, showers and gyms at lorry parking areas.

The new grants are set to cover up to 50 per cent of capital costs - businesses are invited to apply through the National Highways website here: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-work/designated-funds/customer-and-communities/

Applications are open to all lorry parking operators, including those who have already benefitted from the scheme to fund further improvements.

Since the Lorry Park Improvement Scheme was established, National Highways has contributed over £15m through it's Designated Funds Program, which has been matched funded by the industry. Combined with support from the Department for Transport, nearly £69m has been unlocked to improve journeys, security and the wellbeing of HGV drivers.

We’re excited to welcome Physiotherapist Liam Swain to our THRIVE expert series - bringing practical, everyday wellness tips to support the logistics sector.

Today’s one‑minute video focuses on safe lifting in hot weather and one simple technique that makes a big difference: breathing OUT as you lift.

Liam explains why heat changes the way our bodies cope with physical work, and why fatigue, dehydration, and tired muscles can quickly lead to strains and niggles.

Here’s Liam’s advice:
"Hot weather changes things when it comes to lifting.

If you’re spending all day loading, unloading, climbing in and out of vans or moving stock around, your body will fatigue quicker, especially if hydration slips.

And tired muscles are often when little niggles and strains start creeping in. Yes, good manual handling matters. But here’s one really simple thing I’d add…

Breathe OUT as you lift.

It’s something powerlifters use all the time. Controlling your breathing helps manage pressure through the abdomen and spine, allowing the body to move and brace more efficiently.

Simple tweak. Big difference.

And whilst we’re talking hot weather… drink more than you think you need.

Stay hydrated. Move well. Lift smart.

Because trust me… I don’t want all of you ending up in my clinic with sore backs!"

Thank you to Johanna Baxter #1 for West of Scotland MP for raising the vital issues of driver welfare and freight crime in the House of Commons today.

Following her recent visit to Logistics UK member The Malcolm Group with our Senior Policy Manager Alexandra Herdman, it is encouraging to see the real experiences of drivers reflected in Parliament. Drivers are essential to keeping the economy moving, yet too many are working without access to safe, secure facilities and facing the growing threat of freight crime.

Logistics UK has long called for better roadside facilities and stronger action to protect drivers and their vehicles. These changes are critical not just for the resilience of the sector, but for the safety, dignity and wellbeing of the people behind the wheel.
