The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has been informed that the Calais Border Control Post for live animals is currently closed due to the high temperatures currently being experienced in France. This closure will be in place until further notice.

Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have not received similar notifications from other Border Control Posts (BCP) at this stage, so you are advised to check directly with the BCP of entry before setting off.

🚛 A Carmarthenshire haulage operator has had its operator’s licence revoked, while the company director has been disqualified from the industry for 12 months following a public inquiry.

⚖️ The Deputy Traffic Commissioner found serious failings in vehicle maintenance and compliance, describing the operator's approach as "complacent in the extreme".

🔍 A DVSA investigation was launched after two vehicles received multiple immediate prohibitions during annual testing. Inspections uncovered numerous issues, including:

❌ No brake performance assessments
❌ Safety inspections frequently overdue
❌ Incomplete or inaccurate maintenance records
❌ Missing roadworthiness declarations
❌ Poorly recorded vehicle mileages

🚨 The inquiry also found that the operator had been trading under the wrong legal entity and had effectively loaned out the operator’s licence and vehicles to another individual – a serious breach of the operator licensing system.

📝 Although some improvements had been made since the investigation, including the introduction of a driver defect reporting system, concerns remained over the reliability and effectiveness of the records being produced.

🚚 The Traffic Commissioner concluded that the operator had shown too little respect for the responsibilities that come with holding an operator’s licence and said the disqualification was necessary to highlight the seriousness of the breaches.

⚠️ The case serves as a reminder that robust maintenance systems, accurate records and strict compliance are essential responsibilities for every operator.

🚓 A vehicle was stopped by police after officers identified a dangerously insecure load ⚠️

On inspection, the load was found not to be properly secured, posing a risk to other road users and road safety.

📝 The driver was reported for the offence and issued 3 penalty points.

Officers dealt with the matter at the roadside to ensure the vehicle was made safe before continuing 👍

❗ Load security is a key road safety issue ❗

Officers remind drivers that loads on heavy goods vehicles must be properly secured to prevent movement that could cause a collision or danger to the driver and other road users ⚠️

Checks focus on whether:

any part of the load can slide, topple or bounce in any direction

the load can make the vehicle unstable or affect handling

anything can fall from the vehicle during transit

load securing equipment is in poor condition or unsuitable

any aspect of the load presents, or is likely to present, an immediate danger to other road users

Drivers are encouraged to regularly assess their load security before and during journeys to ensure compliance and safety 🚛
