The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is Derbyshire’s longest heritage railway, running steam and diesel trains through the beautiful Derwent Valley between Wirksworth and Duffield.

Just a reminder that tomorrow’s services will be hauled by our resident Class 47, D1842, instead of The Duke.

With the warm, dry weather forecast and increased fire risk, a diesel locomotive is the safest option for the railway and the surrounding countryside.

While we know some visitors may miss seeing steam in action, this is also a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the unmistakable sound and presence of a classic Class 47 through the beautiful Derbyshire countryside.

If you’ve not travelled behind D1842 before, tomorrow is the perfect time to do so!

Important Locomotive Update for Friday’s Services

Due to the weather forecast for this Friday, our services will be hauled by our Class 47 locomotive rather than steam locomotive The Duke.

We understand that some visitors may be disappointed by this change and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. The decision has been made to ensure we can continue to operate our services reliably and safely while protecting our steam locomotive during the forecast conditions.

That said, we know many of our visitors are just as excited to see and travel behind a Class 47. For diesel enthusiasts, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience an iconic British mainline locomotive in action on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.

Whether you’re joining us for the steam or the diesel, we look forward to welcoming you aboard and thank you for your understanding and continued support.

The pass is completely free to apply for and gives local people the chance to enjoy unlimited travel along the line at a fantastic discounted rate. Whether you’re planning a family day out, visiting friends or simply fancy a nostalgic journey through the Derbyshire countryside, your local railway is right on your doorstep.

Three Days of Heritage Diesel Power at Wirksworth EVR 🚆

Mark your calendars for our Summer Diesel Gala, taking place on 7, 8 and 9 August.

Join us for three action-packed days featuring an impressive line-up of heritage diesel traction, including:

• Class 08
• Class 33
• Class 47
• Class 73
• Bubble Car and Derby Lightweight DMU
• Plus a special guest locomotive, to be revealed soon!

Our gates and station café will open from 8:00am each day, serving breakfast sandwiches, tea and coffee to help you start your day.

Experience the railway from a different perspective with cab rides available throughout the weekend, priced at £30 one way or £60 for a full round trip.

We’re also delighted to welcome the LMS 10,000 Group, who will have their main frames on display and their engine shed open to visitors, alongside the Derby Lightweight Preservation Group, who will be offering guided tours of their driving car.

On Saturday evening, don’t miss our special train featuring the guest locomotive, with options to book a train ride only or enjoy fish and chips on board. The real ale bar will also be open during the journey.

The Apollo Bar will be serving throughout the weekend, while Tom Said’s Micro Brewery will be at Duffield Station with a range of local beers and ales.
