A CONVERSATION ABOUT PERCEIVED VALUE:
A customer asked a horse transporter how much it would cost to move a horse.
The Horse transporter gave him a quote: £750
The customer responded: That is seems really high.
The Horse transporter asked: What do you think is a reasonable price for this job?
The customer answered: £375 maximum
The Horse transporter responded: Ok, then I invite you to do it yourself.
The customer answered: I do not know how to.
The Horse transporter said: Alright, then how about for £375 I will teach you how to. So besides saving you £375, you will learn valuable skills that will benefit you in the future.
The customer answered: Sounds good! Let us do it!
The Horse transporter responded: Great! To get started, you are going to need a horse box. You will need hay, nets trailer ties, disinfectant, sprayer, shovel, brushes, buckets
The customer answered: But I do not have any that, and I cannot justify buying all of these for one job.
The Horse transporter responded: Ok. Well then for an additional £100 I can rent my equipment and horse box ` to you to use for this move but you will also need to pay for the fuel you use.
The customer answered: Okay. That is fair.
The Horse transporter responded: Great! We will move the horse on Monday.
The customer answered: I work Monday through Friday. I am only available on the weekends.
The Horse transporter responded: If you want to learn from me then you will need to work when I work. This project will take 2 day so you will need to take 2 days off work.
The customer answered: That means I am going to have to sacrifice my pay for 2 days or use my vacation time!
The Horse transporter responded: That is true. Remember, when you do a job yourself you need to account for unproductive factors.
The customer answered: What do you mean by that?
The Horse transporter responded: Doing a job completely from start to finish includes time spent to plan the move, getting the horsebox ready, travel time, fuel, clean up, and waste disposal, overnight hotels and food amongst other things. That is all-in addition to the actual move itself. And speaking of starting the move, that is where we will start on Monday, so I need you to meet me at the yard at 6:00am.
The customer answered: At 6am?!! My workday does not usually start until 8am!
The Horse transporter responded: Well then, you are in luck! My plan is to load your horse at 6am to get an early start on the traffic as it is a long way from your yard to the new yard and we have rest periods fuel stops, traffic jams and roads works to get through to get your new horse to your yard on time.
The customer answered: You know, I am realizing that a lot more goes into a job than what a customer sees in the finished project. Your quote of £750 is very reasonable. I would like you to handle the move.
