Struggles faced by operators

On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the NBA has spoken. We voted to reform our old Constitution and put in place a modern framework for the way forward. Thank you for seeing the vision and turning out to vote.

Now we are tasked with implementing these constitutional changes, and we will move in short order to get it done.

Unity is essential. The work ahead requires all operators at the table. Whatever differences exist must be reconciled, because a new chapter has begun.

Next steps: we will move expeditiously to hold zonal elections – electing a zone executive member and co-team members in each zone – in preparation to vote in a new executive body at the next Annual General Meeting.

In the meantime, we forge ahead in addressing the challenges facing the National Bus Association.

Congratulations. The struggle continues.

21 Years of Contributions by Bus Operators

For over 21 years, bus operators have paid a $2 entry fee every time they enter the St. George's Bus Terminal.

Using a conservative estimate of 600 buses per day making an average of 5 to 10 trips daily, bus operators have contributed between:

💰 $46 million and $92 million in terminal entry fees over the past 21 years.

Let that sink in.

Public transportation operators have struggled to make these payments, at one point a bus owner was unable to recieve is license disk stick unless all fees owing to the terminal was paid, while maintaining their vehicles, absorbing rising fuel costs, paying insurance, purchasing parts, transporting thousands of school children at reduced fares, and keeping Grenada moving.

Today, we ask a simple question:

How much of these funds have been reinvested into improving public transportation, terminal facilities like seating for elderly citizens, extended opening hours at the terminal, reduction of the carbon monoxide levels due to lack of ventilation, traffic management, commuter comfort, and support for operators?

Grenadians deserve better, we deserve better.

This is not about blame. It is about transparency, accountability, and ensuring that public transportation receives the attention and investment it deserves.

After 21 years and tens of millions of dollars contributed, bus operators and the public deserve answers.

Every morning, before most people wake up, bus operators are already on the road.

We carry children to school. We take workers to their jobs. We help the elderly get to appointments. We connect families, communities, and businesses across Grenada.

For many people, public transportation isn’t a convenience – it’s a necessity.

Yet while the cost of living keeps rising, the cost of operating a bus has risen even faster. Fuel, insurance, parts, maintenance, financing, and daily expenses have all gone up. Still, bus operators continue to do our best to provide reliable service to the public.

Many people see a bus. What they don’t see are the long hours, the sacrifices, the loans, the repairs, and the constant struggle to keep that bus on the road every day.

*Today we’re not just asking for a fare adjustment. We’re asking for a partnership.*

A partnership that recognizes public transportation as an essential service to Grenada.
A partnership that allows operators to modernize our fleets, access affordable financing, and receive pension and social benefits.
A partnership that lets us continue serving the public with dignity.

- Buses are safer and more reliable
- Drivers and conductors receive proper training and support
- Passengers enjoy improved service
- Technology makes transport easier and more efficient
- Young people see public transport as a respected profession
- Grenada develops a modern transport system we can all be proud of

We believe the fees for our elderly, disabled, and vulnerable citizens should be covered by NIS. We believe operators should have the tools and opportunities to provide that service sustainably.

This isn’t about getting rich.
This is about survival.
This is about safety.
This is about protecting livelihoods.
This is about ensuring the next generation can continue serving Grenada.

When public transportation succeeds, Grenada succeeds.
