Archaeologists have uncovered an impressive Ancient Greek theatre on the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea after nearly a century of searching. The discovery reveals a monumental structure that once served the flourishing polis established by Corinthian colonists in the 8th-7th century BC, when Lefkada became a significant center of trade and culture.

The theatre features a large circular orchestra measuring 16.65 meters in diameter, side corridors known as parodoi, and intricately decorated stone thrones. Most remarkably, the cavea contains 24 rows of seats capable of accommodating up to 10,000 spectators, showcasing the scale and importance of theatrical performances in ancient Lefkada.

The search for the theatre began in 1997 through careful analysis of the island's geomorphology and surface remains. Systematic excavations starting in 2015 under the direction of Olympia Vikatou required removing olive groves and modern structures that had encroached upon the ancient site. Despite centuries of agricultural damage, the lower sections remain well-preserved.

Restoration plans are now underway, with a completed preservation study and proposed co-financing program to secure the theatre's future as part of a cultural development initiative led by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
