Air India to hire 40 expat pilots for three years
14 Sept 2015
New Delhi : Air India Charters (AICL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, has initiated the process of hiring 40 expat pilots for a term of three years for flying the company’s B 737-800 narrow body planes. Government officials said that AICL operates flights to West Asia and Southeast Asia and will be expanding its fleet next year for which pilots are required.
“AICL plans to increase the fleet size to 25 aircraft from 17 aircraft by 2016-17,” said the officials. The subsidiary operated 350 flights every week. The hiring, officials said, is in anticipation of “short-term requirement” of up to 40 pilots in the next three years.
For the same, Air India has initiated the tendering process for selection of agencies for hiring the pilots. The tender also lays down the requirements for the pilots, including remuneration and qualification criteria.
“The bidder (agency) can place its bid to induct as many pilots, minimum being five, for technical qualification, by the end of this year,” said officials. However, Air India has taken care of its rentention process. If any pilot, once inducted quits before six months, the agency fees will be confiscated.
Retention of pilots have been a constant problem for the state-owned carrier. Recently, 20 Dreamliner pilots planned to quit for better options in private companies. Experts said that is one reason why Air India will rather hire some additional pilots, fearing shortage later. Private companies, to which Air India loses its staff, have better salaries and often better work environment. In 2014, the carrier saw exit of 40 pilots.
Officials said that they expect the process of hiring the expat pilots to get over by early next year, before the fleet of AICL is expanded.

No more carrying of heavy documents in cockpit, pilots to get electronic flight bags
3 Sep, 2015,

New Delhi : Until recently, a part of any Indian carrier's cockpit resembled an old government office, stacked with 25 manuals and documents running into 24,000 pages. Missing even a single sheet might have meant the flight wouldn't be allowed to take off.
Not anymore. All of that data will now be accessed by pilots on sleek and shiny tablets, including Apple's iPads, cutting a large chunk of the hassles and time consumption associated with carrying 18 kg of paper on board.
IndiGo, India's biggest carrier by market share, has equipped all its planes with these devices called electronic flight bags (EFBs), while SpiceJet and Jet Airways plan to follow shortly, senior executives at the three carriers told ET. "All our current aircraft are fitted with EFBs and so will our future deliveries," Aditya Ghosh, president and CEO of IndiGo, told ET.
Jet Airways is "in the process of submitting applications to the aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), post which it will roll out the devices across its domestic fleet in a phased manner," its executive said.
The airline already has similar devices on its wide-bodied aircraft—Airbus 330s and Boeing 777s, he added. SpiceJet's chief operating officer Sanjiv Kapoor said the airline is "working on" a plan to install tablet computers, without giving a timeline.
Top executives at two IT companies confirmed that airlines including SpiceJet are in talks to buy the devices. They didn't want to be identified.
Apart from manuals with specifications on each part of an aircraft, the EFBs will help a pilot calculate the aircraft payload, speeds, engine thrust and distance required for take-off. They can also be used to calculate performance for landing and be a referral for navigation charts throughout the flight.
"It makes a difference because the manuals have to be up-to-date and they have to be on board before a plane takes off," said one of the IT company executives.
"Especially in case of abnormal situations or system failures, performance calculations using the EFB are very accurate and greatly reduce the chances of error, thus greatly enhancing safety," said Ghosh.
IndiGo's aircraft will use twin iPads, which will back each other up. Management of security and updating of the iPads will be done through software provided by Atlanta-based AirWatch, a company owned by VMWare.
The software for performance accuracy and load calculations is provided by Airbus, while Jeppesen, a Boeing company, provides the navigation charts and data.
"We have started a project on EFB," said Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, CEO of budget carrier GoAir.
"We plan to start using them with the arrival of the first (Airbus) A320 Neo in April 2016." Its existing fleet of 19 A320s, too, will be equipped with EFBs.
How does an airline ensure security? All information is first fed into a "test" tablet computer to ensure there are no problems before it is loaded onto the cockpit EFBs.
Each device will have a unique ID, can be tracked, its update status and battery life checked remotely, its software security ensured and its date protected against unauthorised use. In case of theft, all data can be remotely wiped out and the device rendered unusable.
Compared with updating paper documentation, which can take several days for a large fleet, all tablets can be charged and updated every night.
Profitability and better margins from lower fuel prices have given Indian carriers room to invest more in technology. Air India is also exploring the use of these devices to replace bulky cockpit manuals, ET had reported in June.
EFBs are used by carriers such as United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, SAS, Lufthansa and Frontier Airlines

DGCA recommends pilots to undergo simulator refresher course
1 Sept 2015

NEW DELHI: Aviation regulator DGCA has held the commander of a SpiceJet flight responsible for an incident, which took place at the airport here more than three years ago and has recommended the pilots to undergo simulator refresher course.
The Directorate Civil Aviation, which today made public its final investigation report on the incident involving a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, has also recommended both the pilots - the pilot-in-command and first officer - to undergo technical refresher course/crew resource management with special emphasis on taxing procedures as part of its safety recommendations.
"Taxing procedure as per Boeing FCTM was not followed by the commander, which eventually resulted into the incident," the DGCA said in its report.
"The commander executed an early left turn and did not follow the yellow parking bay line to join the taxi lane which eventually resulted into the incident. The FCTM procedure recommended by Boeing for executing a turn not followed by the commander is a contributory factor," the DGCA said in its report.
The incident had happened when the port side winglet of the Hyderabad-bound aircraft with 137 passengers and seven crew onboard, hit the light mast while executing a left turn during the taxing for take-off.
However, all 144 people onboard had escaped unhurt in the incident, which took place on December 12, 2012.
The DGCA, in its report, found that weather was not a contributory factor to the incident, adding, "the first officer informed the ATC that they had stopped at the runway due to technical. However, the actual reason was not communicated to ATC by cockpit crew."
The regulator as part of its safety recommendations, has asked the commander to undergo simulator refresher and practice in taxing procedure as per FCTM/company's operations manual as well as in executing various turns during taxing besides in power-in and power out on various parking bays.
The commander has also been recommended to undergo two route checks with a training captain examiner/instructor to assess the performance and procedure.
At the same time, the DGCA has also recommended the private airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited ( DIAL), to undertake a study for considering reflective paints on the light mast as well as to carry out one time check on all power in power out bays for verifying necessary clearances as per the civil aviation requirement.
