If you’re thinking of taking the train from Nanyuki to Nairobi (or vice versa), here are a few highlights you should know about.
Let’s start strong! The train has a drop-toilet system. Yes, you read that right. Whatever you release goes straight to the railway tracks 😂. Probably should’ve saved this for last, but we were too excited not to mention it.
There are cabins! Proper movie-style cabins and you can actually sleep in them. The air-con isn’t elite, but since the train runs mostly during the day when the sun is doing the most, it still saves the day.
Instead of staring at endless tarmac, the train snakes through forest-like areas and small settlements you’d never see by road. Free sightseeing included.
The whole experience feels a bit surreal. The train isn’t in a hurry, so time slows all the way down. Bring a book, a friend, or that assignment you’ve been postponing. You’ll finally have no excuse not to finish it.
Those were our takeaways from the ride. Have you tried the train before? What was your experience like?
