This powerful beauty is a waterbuck, one of Africa’s most striking antelopes.

Fun fact: Waterbucks secrete an oily substance in their fur that makes them water-resistant, and gives them a distinct scent that helps deter predators.

There’s something funny yet rarely talked about when it comes to scaling the peaks and valleys of Mount Kenya… or any mountain, really.

For a moment, nothing and no one exists except you and whoever you’re climbing with.

How are they feeling after that last ascent?
How cold are my fingers?
Did I pack enough layers?
Will night catch us on the trail, or will we make camp in time?

These are the only questions that ring. In those moments, you are fully one with yourself.

We don’t return to these moments often, but when we do, we somehow find the parts of ourselves we lost along the way.

If you’re thinking of taking the train from Nanyuki to Nairobi (or vice versa), here are a few highlights you should know about.

Let’s start strong! The train has a drop-toilet system. Yes, you read that right. Whatever you release goes straight to the railway tracks 😂. Probably should’ve saved this for last, but we were too excited not to mention it.

There are cabins! Proper movie-style cabins and you can actually sleep in them. The air-con isn’t elite, but since the train runs mostly during the day when the sun is doing the most, it still saves the day.

Instead of staring at endless tarmac, the train snakes through forest-like areas and small settlements you’d never see by road. Free sightseeing included.

The whole experience feels a bit surreal. The train isn’t in a hurry, so time slows all the way down. Bring a book, a friend, or that assignment you’ve been postponing. You’ll finally have no excuse not to finish it.

Those were our takeaways from the ride. Have you tried the train before? What was your experience like?
