The first route for the autonomous bus has been commissioned. This means that the specialised engineers have taken the bus on the road to map out the route. This is an important part of the pilot project, in order for the autonomous bus to operate its first route. Can you guess the location? 🤔

The new autonomous bus will be tested on routes in Malta and Gozo, as part of a pilot led locally by Malta Public Transport, the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works and the University of Malta as part of the metaCCAZE project. The project aims to explore intelligent and autonomous mobility on the island. metaCCAZE is a Horizon Europe project supported by the European Commission under grant agreement No 101139678. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). Our latest collaboration with Junior College has led to the creation of a new Multisensory Room designed to support student wellbeing and inclusion.

Designed to promote calmness, improve focus and support overall wellbeing, the room includes interactive sensory features, soothing audio and tactile elements. It offers students a welcoming and calming space where they can recharge, refocus and feel supported.

Initiatives like this help make education more accessible and inclusive, ensuring that every student has a space where they feel comfortable and able to thrive. We are pleased to contribute to a project that makes a positive difference within the college community and supports tomorrow’s professional workforce.

Malta Public Transport is continuing to strengthen its sustainable mobility strategy through a €14 million investment in 40 new fully electric buses, further expanding the company’s commitment to cleaner and more efficient public transport across Malta and Gozo. With 35 electric buses already in service, the arrival of the additional vehicles will more than double the size of the company’s electric fleet.

The rollout will also support plans for Gozo’s public transport network to transition towards fully electric operations in the weeks ahead, with a number of the newly acquired buses earmarked specifically for routes on the sister island.

The new vehicles consist of 13 electric six-metre minibuses, 19 electric nine-metre buses and eight electric 12-metre buses. The smaller buses will primarily serve village cores and residential areas, providing a more agile and environmentally friendly transport solution within urban centres, while the larger vehicles will operate across the wider route network.

This latest investment marks another major milestone in the ongoing transformation of Malta’s public transport system, placing greater emphasis on innovation, operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. The additional electric buses are expected to reduce carbon emissions by a further 2,400 tonnes annually, contributing directly towards Malta’s broader climate and sustainability objectives.

Beyond their environmental benefits, electric buses offer a significantly improved journey experience through quieter operation, smoother performance and enhanced onboard comfort. The investment will also strengthen operational capacity across the network, allowing Malta Public Transport to respond more effectively to passenger demand through additional frequencies, increased seating availability and the potential introduction of new routes where required.
