✅ The comment from our Dato' Log. Ts. Dr. Chang Kah Loon 拿督曾家麟博士, PhD (USM), FCILT, FLogM, was published in Nanyang Siang Pau on 18 July 2026.

Brief translation:

1. The market, particularly the containerised shipping sector, remains encouraging and generally positive. Seaborne trade continues to account for around 90% of global trade, making maritime logistics the backbone of international business.

2. Yes, the increase in exports to the United States has led to higher cargo volumes and stronger demand for warehousing, freight forwarding, customs clearance, and container transportation. Port operations and international shipping have benefited the most.

3. Yes, our group of professional logisticians has observed that more international manufacturers, regional distribution centres, and cross-border e-commerce companies are choosing Malaysia as a strategic logistics hub. This reflects the ongoing diversification of global supply chains and Malaysia's growing importance in Southeast Asia. At the same time, the demand for professionally qualified logisticians is increasing. Universities and higher education institutions are producing more graduates in logistics and supply chain management to support industry needs.

4. E-commerce will continue to create strong demand for warehousing, order fulfilment, last-mile delivery, and cross-border logistics. We expect cold chain logistics to grow steadily, especially in the food, pharmaceutical, and healthcare sectors.

5. Yes, Malaysia's electronics and semiconductor industries continue to generate strong demand for secure, reliable, and efficient logistics services. Many logistics companies are investing in warehouse automation, digital technologies, and AI-based applications to improve operational efficiency and customer service.

6. Malaysia's key strengths include its strategic geographical location, well-established ports, comprehensive logistics infrastructure, and strong manufacturing sector. To strengthen its long-term competitiveness, the country should continue enhancing customs efficiency, digitalisation, multimodal connectivity, logistics infrastructure, and human capital development. These improvements will further support export growth, e-commerce, and international trade.

7. Overall, Malaysia continues to face a shortage of professional logisticians (individuals who possess at least a bachelor's degree in logistics or an internationally recognised professional qualification in logistics). Based on Malaysia's population of approximately 34 million, the country should aim to develop at least 30,000 professional logisticians, compared with an estimated 3,000 today. Equally important is ensuring that educators and trainers possess the appropriate academic qualifications, professional competence, and industry experience to prepare the next generation of logistics professionals.
