Physical Talk on IEM & It's Engineering Disciplines Specialising in Civil Engineering & Road Safety Audit
Venue: DK1 Hall, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Malaya
Date & Time: 20 May 2026 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM)
CPD: 2
Organised By Technical Division - Highway and Transportation Engineering & SIG - Safety Engineering

SYNOPSIS

This talk will introduce all students and young engineers to the major engineering disciplines in Malaysia and the functions of IEM and the Board of Engineers (BEM). It will then focus on Civil Engineering and its various disciplines, such as Structural, Infrastructure, Soil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Road & Highway, Traffic and finally Road Safety Audits or RSA. With so many road accidents reported in the media, ranging from cars and buses crashing into road barriers to accidents during construction and the ever increasing number of vehicles on the road, it is imperative that more emphasis on road safety be incorporated in all road engineering designs. Road safety is now given much priority in road planning, design and construction and presently, there is a discipline in BEM called “Civil RSA”. Hence, RSA is an opportunity in a young engineer’s career as presently, there are less than maybe 70 accredited Road Safety Auditors in Malaysia, especially in Sabah and Sarawak. The goal of the RSA is to ensure that all road projects and existing roads are capable of providing the highest practicable standard of road safety for all road users.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Richard Wong graduated from Monash University, Melbourne in 1984 and is presently the Principal of RW Consultancy, a civil engineering consultancy firm that he founded in 2005. He is a Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate and has some 40 years experience in the engineering profession. He has worked in both overseas and local projects and his key experience extends to Road Safety Audits (RSA), road and interchange designs, traffic light designs, traffic and transportation engineering, traffic impact assessments, traffic studies and project management. Ir. Richard is a Road Safety Auditor accredited by Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR), Malaysia and BEM. Ir. Richard is a Past-Chairman of the Highway and Transportation Engineering Division of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). Ir. Richard has conducted several RSA talks, courses and seminars for IEM in Petaling Jaya, Johor Bahru, Penang, K. Kinabalu and Miri; and also MIROS and DBKL. He has also attended several road safety courses and seminars including a Road Safety Engineering Workshop by Vic Roads in Melbourne, Australia.

Organised By Special Interest Group - Senior AND Technical Division - Highway & Transportation Engineering

SYNOPSIS

Bukit Wawasan, situated in Puchong, offers a refreshing escape with its lush greenery and accessible forest trails. Unlike more strenuous peaks, this route focuses on the basic trail loop, providing a steady and rewarding hike through the Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve. The trail features a peak elevation of approximately 233m (764 ft), making it an ideal choice for those seeking a manageable yet scenic outdoor experience. As urban development continues around the forest reserve, this area remains a vital water catchment area and a sanctuary for local biodiversity. We must ensure no pollution is left behind to preserve this vital area for future generations. The path offers a well-maintained environment for city dwellers to connect with nature. Fun Fact: The surrounding forest is part of an ongoing effort to maintain sustainable green lungs within the city, contributing to the region's unique natural heritage.

Peak Elevation: The summit sits at approximately 233m (764) ft
Meet at the Trail Head: 7.00 am

Difficulty: It is considered a beginner-to-moderate hike. The beginning and final 200 meters toward the peak are the steepest sections, while the middle portion is relatively flat

Webinar Talk On “New Development In Satellite Imageries And New Ways To Consume The Pixels”
Venue: Digital Platform
Date & Time: 14 May 2026 (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM)
CPD: 2
Organised By Technical Division - Highway and Transportation Engineering (HTETD)

SYNOPSIS

The first high resolution satellite image available commercially was the IKONOS with 1m Ground Sample Distance. It created a new approach to which the planning and preliminary design engineers work. Since then, which was the year 1999, the satellite imagery market has been competing fiercely in term of spatial resolution as well as temporal resolution, and of course, pricing. 20 over years have passed and the market trend has somewhat shifted from comparing how high the resolutions are, and how often we can get data over a specific area, to a new approach of how well we can provide the access of these pixels to the end users.

The changes in the access of the data attributed to the improvement of the internet speed and the computing power of the cloud platforms. With the maturity of the data users, they can now access the satellite imagery, either by just viewing, by streaming to their familiar software or even download to their workstation. They also can benefit from a vast collection of analytic tools as well as the tasking of the satellites with a few clicks in front of the workstation.

There is another new avenue of data sources which has not been explored for many years. Besides the big names from the US and European countries, there is a big pool of good data from China which opens up a door of opportunity to data users like the engineers. This situation is especially helpful in our region where the availability of good data is very much challenged by the weather condition.
