Maritime transport plays a crucial role in inter-island connectivity, especially for remote coastal communities in the Philippines. It also facilitates domestic inter-island trade as well as the movement of Filipinos and foreign tourists. In these challenging times, the Philippine maritime industry must adapt and keep up with the latest innovations and modern technologies to have an efficient, competitive, environmentally sustainable Philippine Water Transport System.

Discussions with key stakeholders during the MARINA Maritime Industry Development Plan 2019-2028 formulation process revealed that the sector is confronted by a number of challenges, the most significant of which is the declining competitiveness of the maritime industry, which has resulted in the slow growth of investment, employment, revenues and maritime sector’s contribution to the Philippine Economy.

The UP National Center for Transportation Studies in cooperation with the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory will conduct a FREE WEBINAR entitled "Addressing the Challenges Faced by the Philippine Maritime Sector" to discuss the different challenges faced by the Philippine Maritime Sector and tackle the different impacts and prospects for the Philippine maritime sector, as shared by various stakeholders, in the pandemic and post-pandemic scenarios.
