Behind Bucharest’s grand churches is a more intimate story: the home of the man who painted them.
Gheorghe Tattarescu bought this house in 1855. For almost forty years, it was his family home and studio—a private world of portraits, sketches and religious commissions.
Trained in Italy, he brought the influence of Italian academic painting into Romanian religious art. If you have admired the nineteenth-century paintings inside Kretzulescu Church, you have already encountered his work.
His house tells another part of that story. An enclosed courtyard, a glazed gallery, family possessions and personal documents bring us closer to the person behind the paintings.
In 1951, his granddaughter, Georgeta Wertheimer, donated the house and part of his work. Two years later, it opened as a museum.
A church reveals his public legacy. His home reveals the life behind it.
