Laying typically 2-4 eggs and incubated by both parents for a period of 22-24 days with chicks fledging within 19-20 days, pairs have been seen performing dramatic diving courtship displays and fiercely protective of their nests here in the flood Savannah plains of Pian Upe conservation area Northeastern Uganda.

Widely distributed across sub Saharan Africa, common in east Africa spanning from Tz, Kenya and Uganda respectively.

The Lilac breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is a monogamous bird that tend to mate for life.

They don’t build their own cavities or nests but take over abandoned woodpecker or kingfisher holes or sometimes use natural tree hollows.

They’re territorial birds and highly defend their nest site against predators.
Bateleur eagle, peregrine falcons and swift are the bird’s worst predators.
Least concern on IUCN.

The Western Crested Guineafowl (Guttera verreauxi) is a striking bird species native to parts of western and central Africa.

🐦 Identification

👉Body:

Dark blackish plumage covered in small white spots

👉Crest:

Distinctive curly black crest on top of the head

👉Face:

Bright red and blue bare skin

👉Size:

About 50–56 cm (20–22 inches) long

🌍 Habitat

👉Found in lowland forests, forest edges, and wooded savannas
👉Range includes countries such as Nigeria, Cameroon, and surrounding regions of West/Central Africa

🍃 Behavior

👉Usually seen in small groups

👉Spends most of its time on the ground searching for:
🍒Seeds
🍒 Fruits
🍒 Insects
🍒 Small invertebrates
🍒 Strong runners; will fly up into trees mainly to roost at night

🥚 Breeding

👉Nests are simple ground scrapes hidden in vegetation

👉Females typically lay 4–8 eggs
