American Airlines says it is “doubling down” on Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, its biggest hub, with a big schedule shake up meant to make connections feel less frantic. DFW is where more than 30% of American’s daily connecting customers and connecting checked bags pass through, so when DFW gets clogged, the whole network feels it.

The biggest change is how flights are grouped. For years, American’s DFW schedule has been built around nine banks, and a “bank” just means a big wave of flights that arrive around the same time, then another wave that departs soon after, so people can connect quickly. Beginning in April 2026 and showing up in schedules starting Dec. 27, 2025, American says DFW will move to a 13 bank structure, spreading those waves out to reduce congestion, improve connection options, and cut down on those super tight “run and pray” connections.

American also says it is adding more scheduled block time to improve on time performance, and investing in more remote deplaning capability at DFW so diverted flights are less likely to sit forever waiting on a gate. Longer term, it points to gate growth and upgrades including Terminal A and C pier extensions and the planned Terminal F buildout by 2030 with 31 new gates, plus dedicated premium lounges, Flagship check in, and a new U.S. Customs facility.
