Africa is the birthplace of coffee and is a producer of some of the best coffee in the world with 12% of global production.
The main African coffee producing states are Ethiopia, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, and Tanzania.
Coffee holds a large place in the economic sector. The number of consumers around the world continues to increase year by year and attract more customers.
However, the distribution of value within the production chain is unbalanced and the African continent is particularly paying a heavy price.
Indeed, the prices paid to coffee growers in African countries are lower than those in other countries, whether for Arabica or Robusta.
The share of African producers in the roasted coffee value chain is also lower than that of other regions of the world. Thus, it would be between 8.7% and 12.6%, with 12.6% for Ethiopia and 10% for Uganda, the two main exporters of the continent, against 15.7% for India and 14.9% for Brazil.
As a result, unfair trading conditions cause African coffee farmers to lose $ 1.47 billion in income per year. Losses are estimated at $ 713.1 million for Ethiopian farmers, $ 229.7 million for Ugandans, $ 22.7 million for Congolese, $ 22.4 million for Cameroonians and $ 1.4 million for Togolese.
This situation is untenable for the African producer, who produces quality coffee, but who receives the lowest prices of all producers, globally.
In your opinion, what should we do then to make African coffee more profitable in the container and in the rest of the world?
Let's promote Africa's raw materials!
